ONLY one month to go until the 2016 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships and athletes from around the world are currently in the final stages of training ready to take on the challenges of the world championships course in Australia’s spectacular Snowy Mountains, New South Wales.
As the clock ticks over to one month to go final preparations are underway for Australia’s first time hosting of the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships and event organisers are encouraging all national federations and athletes to complete the final checklists and then to prepare for the biggest party this side of the equator.
With nominations for elite athletes closing it won’t be long until we can announce this years contenders for the world title. Already, reigning world champions Flora Duffy (BER) and Ruben Ruzafa (SPA) have announced their intention to make the trip downunder to defend their title and compete for their share of the USD $45,000 prize money.
The rewards for finishers at the 2016 World Champs have also been announced with the limited edition world champs finishers medallion designs released this week along with the coveted finishers commemorative towels.
Event Director Robyn Lazenby from In2Adventure told us “This is a really exciting time with one month to go and the release of the finisher medallion designs. It is also a critical time for national federations and athletes alike. We are aiming to make this the biggest party in the southern hemisphere but a few housekeeping duties need to be completed first to ensure all our athletes can enjoy the celebrations to the full.
Based on feedback from athletes we have developed a lot of new initiatives for this world champs, specifically tailored to cross triathlon. The aim is to make it as easy as possible for athletes and teams. It’s vitally important that athletes and national federations are across all of these initiatives to ensure they can make the most of the benefits available. The checklist we have put together is a great tool to ensure everything is in place and we encourage all national federations to complete this now.”
So what are some of these new initiatives?
Team Manager Access
The first of these, is the capacity for each national team to nominate a Team Manager who will be the first point of contact and the representative of their team for the duration of the event. This is not new, however what has been introduced is that both Team Managers and Coaches will have access to both the Feed Zone and the Repair Zone which are new for this World Champs.
In previous years a number of countries who fielded smaller teams were disadvantaged if they did not have an accredited coach travelling with the team. Now both coaches and/or nominated team managers will be permitted in the Feed Zone and Repair Zone, meaning that each team has the capacity to have assistance available to them even if they don’t have an accredited coach travelling with them. However, the team manager MUST be nominated as part of the national federations entry so relevant accreditation passes can be issued.
Team Manager nominations are submitted with the entry spreadsheet or alternatively email the team at firstname.lastname@example.org
Mountain Bike Feed Zones & Repair Zones
Given the very different nature of cross triathlon, two new zones have been introduced to the mountain bike course. These are the Feed Zone where athletes can access their own hydration and nutrition, and the Repair Zone where athletes can access tools to make repairs to their mountain bikes if required.
We encourage all team managers, coaches and athletes to visit the website for full details.
Mixed Team Relay
Entries for the Mixed Team Relay are now due. The Team Relay is an excellent opportunity for athletes to have a second opportunity to represent their country in this shorter action filled relay. Each of the four team member completes a ‘mini’ triathlon, promising audiences a fast paced and entertaining competition and promising some true international rivalry as teams race for their country to determine the world’s best.
This is the first time that a Mixed Team Relay has been hosted at an ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships. To enable maximum participation, the rules relating to the composition of teams have been relaxed by the ITU. Both Elite and/or Age Group athletes can make up a team. So make sure you have your country nominated!
Full details can be found on the web page HERE.
Show your National Pride
In preparation for the opening ceremony, countries are asked to nominate their countries chosen Flag Bearer. This will be a huge honour for the chosen athlete as they lead their team in the Athletes Parade and Opening Ceremony. All countries are asked to provide a short bio for their flag bearer to ensure we can acknowledge their contribution and share their achievements with the rest of the world.
We want this to be a celebration of all nations and as well as the national anthems we are asking each country to nominate a special song for their team. A song that will have your team on their feet and celebrating your amazing country.
Send your nominations to: email@example.com
