Triathlon Australia Events Affected by COVID-19 Update

UPDATE April 14, 2020:  Triathlon Australia today announced they will be extending the withdrawal of sanctioning from all events and races scheduled on our calendar until 30 June 2020.

The extension is in line with the recent announcement from the International Triathlon Union who suspended all activities due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation globally.

Triathlon Australia CEO Miles Stewart said there was no option but to suspend racing right now.

“Today we met with race directors to inform them of the decision and discuss ways in which we can continue to work with them during this period to ensure we can all emerge from this with a viable industry.

“It will require the support of the entire triathlon community to help return our sport to it’s very best, but that time is down the track for now,” said Stewart.

“It doesn’t mean that business has come to a halt at triathlon, in fact the opposite. We are doubling down and working collaboratively with the State and Territories to find solutions to steer our sport through this. However, like so many, we have been impacted by the crisis and we need to adjust as required.

We look forward to the return of events in the near future as I’m sure so many of you do also. In the meantime, we hope you are still managing some training or exercise to help keep you motivated.

March 19, 2020: We are all experiencing unprecedented and significant challenges currently, and Triathlon Australia is working diligently through this rapidly changing environment. We all must do our part to mitigate the spread of the virus.  When we do, our ability to flatten the curve is dramatic.

As such, please be aware that as of 9:00am on March 19th, 2020 Triathlon Australia has decided to withdraw all sanctioning from events and races on our scheduled calendar until 30th April 2020.

The decision was made by the Triathlon Australia Board at an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday 17th March in order to mitigate the spread of the virus.  We are undertaking all necessary steps to ensure the health and safety of all members and participants.

This is inclusive of triathlon club events and applies to all events irrespective of participant numbers.

There is no doubt this situation is constantly changing, so Triathlon Australia will be regularly reviewing the situation, and will provide timely updates and changes to this as they occur.
