Triathlon Australia is pleased to announce Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture as the training venue in preparation for Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The location is a key component for the Australian National Triathlon Team where they will base themselves in preparation for Tokyo. Miyakojima has a proud triathlon history, hosting the renowned Strongman Triathlon now in it’s 35th year.

Triathlon Australia National Performance Director Justin Drew says, “We look forward to utilising all the facilities that Miyakojima has to offer as well as extending the long friendship between Australia and Japan and sharing in a cultural exchange with the proud people of this beautiful island.”

“It is with thanks to the City of Miyakojima and Prefecture of Okinawa for their hospitality and unwavering support that this arrangement has been possible.

“To the Governor of Okinawa Prefecture, Yasuhiro Tamaki, the Mayor of Miyakojima, Toshihiko Shimoji, and the people of Miyakojima we say domo arigato gozaimasu. We look to forging a strong friendship with you all and welcome your support of our athletes as we prepare to race in what will be an exceptional Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo,” said Drew.

On April 3 2019, the Australian Embassy Tokyo launched the AUS+RALLY sports dipolomacy initiative which celebrates Team Australia in Japan during 2019-20. AUS+RALLY brings together new and existing sports diplomacy activities, and is intended to support Japan’s hosting of the world’s greatest sporting events and their important legacy.
