Outstanding achievements have been recognised in teams and individual athletes from 15 sports, ranging from tennis and soccer through to roller derby.
Once again, our selection committee chaired by Rob de Castella were overwhelmed by the quality of nominations and the caliber of athletes and community members that have been nominated.
The awards highlight the vibrant sport and recreation community we have in Canberra, which nurtures athletes from the grassroots all the way to the elite level, as demonstrated by the range of athletes and volunteers recognised as finalists for this year’s awards.
It was particularly exciting to see so many nominees for our inaugural Rising Star Award, which celebrates outstanding achievements from an emerging athlete. The response to the award just goes to show that the future is bright for sport in Canberra.
Whilst the winners in each category will be formally announced at the Awards Night on 30 November 2018, I’d like to congratulate all finalists for their remarkable achievements. We had nearly 100 nominations this year and I am told the Judging Panel had a tough job. Recognition as a finalist is a great achievement in itself.
I hope to be joined by all finalists, their families and supporters at the Awards Night, being held at the National Arboretum on 30 November. Tickets are now on sale to the event which will include guest speaker Australian Boxing legend Danny Green and acclaimed journalist Samantha Lane as the Master of Ceremonies. Tickets can be purchased from the event website at www.cbrsportawards.com.au.
