Penny Slater, the current Australian National Champion and ITU Under 23 World Cross Triathlon champion claimed one of her biggest wins in her short professional triathlon career, winning the elusive Xterra Asia Pacific Off-Road Triathlon Championships in Kenting Taiwan.
With a strong field on the start line, she was able to use all the one percenters that have been her focus all summer, to dominate on the run leg.
“I had a perfect race really. I was able to have one of my best swims ever which meant I was able to come out with a group and work into the ride with them. I came off the bike with my coach, Jacqui Allen, and knew that if I was going to go it would have to be now. So I went for it and I’m so glad I was able to pull it off.”
The breakthrough win wasn’t a surprise as she has been training really well and knew she had the stamina and speed to launch the attack and claim the win over her coach Jacqui Allen.
“I’m just thrilled that I was able to put a performance forward that I know I’ve always been capable of, it’s nice to have that validation that I do belong beside some of the best Xterra athletes in the world”
Slater is now in Rotorua for the Xterra New Zealand Championship, as she goes head to head with Allen and New Zealand’s best triathletes this weekend.
