As you will be aware Australia is currently experiencing one of its worst bushfire seasons on record. It has affected many Australians including a number of people in the triathlon community whose houses and properties have been adversely affected. Our thoughts are with all those affected and our emergency services working tirelessly.
Canberra and the ACT region have been experiencing high levels of air pollution health levels for a number of weeks, with most days at a hazardous extreme level, posing a significant health risk to people, especially those exercising at high intensity. There are currently fires burning near the border of ACT and the current long-range weather forecast is not favourable.
Taking into consideration the current and forecast air quality, State of Alert declared for the ACT, unpredictable conditions, bushfire situation, low lake levels, the current AIS position statement on smoke pollution and exercise, and recommendations from authorities, Triathlon ACT and Triathlon Australia have decided to cancel the Capital Trilogy Triathlon event on the weekend of the January 18-19 2020.
This decision has not been made lightly, with all parties believing it is in the best interests to make a proactive decision at the earliest available opportunity due to the number of people who are travelling from overseas and interstate. The health and safety of athletes and all people involved with attending and working at the event is our number one priority.
Triathlon ACT will process refunds to all registered athletes over the next two weeks.
The decision on all remaining events during the 2019-20 season, in the ACT, will be made event by event closer to each event date. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
