TACT Committee & Life Members
Triathlon ACT Committee 2010/2011:
The Triathlon ACT Committee is responsible for overseeing the organisation of triathlons, duathlons and related events. Each year the committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting and serve a term of one year. The current committee consists of the following people:
- President: Steve Hough
After competing with teams in triathlons for a couple of years, I completed my first solo triathlon in 1999. Having found that my fast-twitch fibres no longer existed, I decided that I was best suited to triathlons that gave me plenty of time to finish so I’ve done quite a few ½ ironman races and 3 Australian ironman triathlons since then (the last one was the 2009 Oz Ironman in Port Macquarie). Short and multi-day adventure races also caught my interest in the mid ‘90s. After being a committee member and vice president of the Vikings Tri Club for several years I found myself on the TACT committee (still not sure how that happened) and then vice president. I very much enjoy working with a great bunch of people on the TACT committee and in theTACT office. During that time I also developed a keen interest in the organisation and running of triathlons. After a period of learning how to set up and run a race, including jointly managing the Australian Duathlon Championships in 2007, I “flew solo” as a Race Operations Manager a couple of years ago and have enjoyed a regular stint as a ROM each winter and summer season.
- Vice President: Brad Allen
I joined the Bilbys novice program in 2007 and apart from just loving the sport from the outset, I immediately appreciated the level of work that goes into both the club novice programs and the TACT race program. My background in corporate sports management and project management gave me a natural interest in the structure and organisation required to put on triathlon and associated events, so when injury struck me down in 2009 I turned to officiating and directing races. After all, you can’t be involved in triathlon and not want to be completely involved! All Canberra triathletes have seen the level of work put in by many TACT committee members who prove that point. I nominated for the TACT committee in the hope that my professional background and ideas might help the organisation develop and grow in the future. After a year on committee it is apparent to me that the many challenges faced by triathlon (and triathletes) in Canberra requires a dedicated committee providing strong direction and working in conjunction with the National body which will ensure the future of the sport in the ACT. As Vice President, I hope to build on the work that TACT under President Steve Hough has commenced over the past year, and look forward to helping provide a bumper triathlon season in 2011-12 for all our members.
- Treasurer: Robyn McClelland
Robyn McClelland has competed in local triathlons for more than a decade – eventually managing an Olympic distance event in 2007. In 2009, Robyn qualified for age group selection in the Olympic Distance for the World Championships. Robyn has been a member of the TACT Committee for the past three years and has facilitated a review of the Strategic Plan and the development of a TACT risk management plan. Robyn has been Race Director for the annual Women and Girls’ Fun Run/ Walk run by the ACT Cross Country Club since 2006. She has extensive experience in the Australian Public Service and the Australian Parliamentary Service, with particular interest in how to manage organisations well. She is married with three daughters. Qualifications: M Admin Studies, B Sc (Hons), Grad Dip Education, GAICD.
- General Member: Linda Meyer
As a very latecomer to the sport, I came into triathlon in 2008 with a few half marathons under my belt and was looking for something to keep me fit over the summer months and incorporate my love of cycling. I was hooked after my first triathlon which was one of the local novice events (on my MTB!). Since then I have joined FIT (Committee member) and Bilbys, and mainly participate in local sprint triathlons over the summer and running through the winter. My goal is to move onto the longer distances. I also ran my first marathon in 2010. I love training for a specific event and I especially enjoy the camaraderie of training and the spirit of competition. I have just clocked up 22 years service in Defence (Army) which keeps me very busy and on the move. I have a MA (Islamic Studies), B.Sc (Chem/Biol), Grad Dip Strategy and Dip Applied Vietnamese Language.
- General Member: Alex Gosman
Coming of a running and swimming background I have been doing triathlons in one form or another since the mid 1980’s but have always found the bike a challenge. Not helped by only having a selection of second hand $20 bikes. It is only over the last few years that I have become “serious” about cycling under pressure from my hyper competitive children although I still remain a danger to any peleton I join and my ability to fix a puncture remains limited. I generally participate in the local season and a few interstate events as well as oceans swims (eg Cole Classic). I was chuffed to have been actually penalised for drafting at husky last year as i have never been fast enough previously on the bike to draft (Not that i was drafting of course).
As I age my claim to fame as a triathlete increasingly becomes “being the father of Hayley and Michael” which is not a bad thing really. I have been a long standing member of Bilbys and really love the friendship the sport offers. I am also the President of Athletics ACT and hope to see more scope for co-operation and promotion between the two sports and look to focus on raising participation particularly at the junior level where triathlon has alot to offer.
