JUNIOR News from corey bacon
22 December 2011
Finals day at Runaway Bay:
In the female races we had Bridget in the A final and Freya and Ayla in the B final. Bridget in her first year was up against the best junior girls in the country and she didn’t disappoint putting everything into it, being the youngest at the event. Bridget ran strong and ended up running the 2nd fastest split of 9min for 2.4k. In the A final she finished 12th which put her 11th overall for the weekend. Well done.
In the female B final we had Ayla and Freya. They both had good swims even though they were a little behind with some work to do. They worked brilliantly on the bike, making up ground on the other girls. Both girls gave it their all with Freya finishing 6th and Ayla 7th in the B final. Ayla finished 25th and Freya 28th overall for the weekend.
Onto the boys finals and in the D final we had two athletes. Tom and Hugh. Both boys finished well with Hugh running into 6th place and Tom 8th place in their final. Good job boys.
The C final was next and we had Cameron race for 10th position in his final and 47th overall.
Onto the B final and we had 2 athletes, Brayden and Jack.. Jack had the 3rd fastest ride split in the B final and 13th fastest overall. No one in the B final could match Brayden’s speed as he ran himself into 2nd place in the B final and if you gave him another half a lap or more he would have taken 1st place. He also ran the 4th fastest time overall. Great work Brayden and a good finish to a good weekend to finish 18th overall. Jack was consistent all weekend running to finish 11th in the B final, finishing 23rd overall.
The A final is what is all about and Declan was our one ACT representative. A great performance but the bike hurt him too much and he finished 15th in the A final but finished 7th overall after sitting in the top 3 after race 2 and up until the final. His highest overall position during the weekend was 2nd so a good effort.
Regardless of whether personal goals were achieved or not everyone should be proud of how they performed and I know they all gained valuable experience. They all made friends with athletes across the country and that is great for all and the sport. It was great to be part of ACT’s biggest team at the event and from my calculations I hope that the team will be even bigger next year. We received really good feedback on our performances and I know we will be even stronger next year. Let’s just make swimming our friend. Swim, swim and swim.
