Ever thought of becoming a technical official?

 Officiating at a triathlon is the best seat in the house!

Becoming a Technical Official (TO) is a great way to be involved in the sport you love and it’s a way of giving back to it. Whether you are a current athlete, no longer competing, currently injured, a coach, a friend, a family supporter or just interested in a new challenge, we would love to have you on board!

The Role of a Technical Official

Technical officials work to ensure that racing is safe, fair, and fun. While a Technical Official’s role is considered volunteering, there is a small payment available for each event you officiate at.

About the Training

THEORY COMPONENT- The course is available to do online at any time (modules 1-9, see links below) and when finished, we arrange for you to meet online with a senior TO and run through module 10 to complete the theoretical part.

PRACTICAL COMPONENT- this is also called your Field Of Play (FOP). We provide you with a list of events and suggest you choose a couple of different ones. A TO will work with you and help you through the assessment.

What happens next?

Upon completion of the online course and your FOPs, you will need to provide us with a Working With Children (WWCC) Certificate so you can be accredited as a Local Technical Official (LTO) and added to the National Technical Register operated by Triathlon Australia.

A Local Technical Official is required to officiate at a minimum of THREE (3) sanctioned events over the course of the next twelve months to maintain their accreditation. If you do this, then you can also earn yourself a free Triathlon Australia membership for the following season (club membership fees still apply).

When officiating at sanctioned event, you will meet with the rest of the technical team for a pre-event briefing to discuss the technical plan and positions allocated on the field of play. The Technical Delegate (i.e. the boss) will provide all information to the team before handing over authority to the Race Referee.

Many of our officials have been involved for years. Some choose to officiate locally, some nationally and others mix it up with international events such as Ironman Kona and World Triathlon Events.
