Balmoral Triathlon Club launches Youth Development Programs for 2016-17

On the back of the successful TRYstars program, Balmoral Triathlon Club has launched their own Youth Development Programs for the 2016-17 season.

TRYstars is Triathlon Australia’s national “first touch” junior participation program that encourages kids aged 7-12 to get involved in Triathlon all around Australia.

Balmoral Triathlon Club lauds the wonderful influence of the TRYstars program on children up to 12 years of age, however the club felt that more could be done for the adolescent demographic within and outside of their club.

After the successful introduction of TRYstars for our 7-12 year olds, we felt it would be good to offer a program which bridges the gap from 13 to adulthood,” said Balmoral Triathlon Club Coaching Director Lew Hartley, who organised this great initiative.

“We felt that creating the opportunity for young athletes to experience the sport and continue to grow in Triathlon during these formative years is an essential building block to ensure a strong Triathlon community in the future.”

“The youth programs focus on developing the athlete’s skills for a more competitive environment. For example, areas of training range from: progressing to cycling with cleats, safe bunch cycling, fly mounting the bike etc.”

Hartley believes that the benefits of the new Youth Development Programs won’t just be confined to the to the 13 – 19 age bracket, but the entire club will profit from its introduction.

“For Balmoral Triathlon Club, it aligns with our vision of being a community club for all ages and abilities,” Hartley said. “For the youth the programs provide a safe environment to learn the basic skills and a pathway of development enabling athletes every opportunity to achieve at the highest level of our sport.”

The Youth Development Program starts on Friday the 18th of November and comprises of 10 x one hour sessions at Balmoral Beach.

The program is also open for juniors outside of the Balmoral Triathlon Club.

“Opportunities for youth triathletes are few, especially on the lower North Shore of Sydney.” Hartley said. “The Balmoral Triathlon Club’s Youth Program creates the opportunity for eligible athletes to train in a safe environment among their peers regardless which club they are from.”

The Youth Development Programs, in conjunction with the TRYstars program, has been devised into four different categories:

  1. TRYstars Group 1: 7-9 year olds
  2. TRYstars Group 2: 10-12 year olds
  3. ITU Youth: 13-16 year olds
  4. ITU Junior: 17-19 year olds

“The programs all lead up to the Balmoral Triathlon Club’s TRYstars Race and the Youth Race on the 12th of February where they can put all their training into practice,” said Club President Murray Robertson.

“We hope to see as many faces there as possible!”
