Club Close-Up: Brighton Baths Athletic Club

Triathlon NSW always try and actively find ways to add value to our members. One way we have been trying to increase this during the 2019/2020 season is through the amount of member event giveaways we have been providing.

This month we are pleased to announce Dave Sullivan of Brighton Baths Athletic Club as the winner of a free entry to Kurnell 2. Dave is a regular competitor in the Sydney Triathlon League 1 Interclub, placing 7th overall last year in the MVP ladder. Meanwhile the Brighton Polar Bears are edging their way up the ladder after a 5th place finish in last year’s Interclub. They currently sit one point behind the 4th placed Bondi BRATS coming into Round 5 at Kurnell 2.

We used this opportunity to get to know Dave and his club, which is one of the oldest clubs in NSW.

Tell us a little about BBAC.

We are located at Brighton Le Sands, AKA Brighton Baths.  Most in triathlon may remember us as Botany Bay Tri Club, which was founded in 1992, using the baths for races.  The tri club merged with Brighton Baths in 2007. Brighton Baths is over 100 years old, founded in 1910.  In winter we compete in running events and in summer we compete in aquathon and swimming events and have a nippers club for the kids. All events cater for all abilities, from beginners to more advanced athletes.

What makes BBAC a unique club in NSW?

We are unique in that we are a small but friendly club, that doesn't take itself too seriously.

How long have you been doing triathlons and how did you first get involved?

I started in triathlons in 1998, due to injuries while marathon training, I started swimming and running as my recovery and just decided to give triathlons a go and loved it from then.

What is your favourite race and why?

My favourite races would have to be Escape From Alcatraz (San Francisco) and Noosa, with special mention to Nepean Tri, which I try not to miss each year.

What’s on your race calendar for the rest of the season (besides Kurnell, obviously!)

As for this season,  I'm heading back to do Escape From Alcatraz again then over to Fiji Tri, which I've done a few times.-

Thank you for sharing your story Dave and best of luck for Kurnell and your other races!
