With international (ITU) rules change for the Olympic year, requiring championship events to be spread further apart, the City of Newcastle Ocean ParaTriathlon can no longer be staged as part of the existing Sparke Helmore Triathlon in February.
Needing to be least 30 days prior to the world cup race in Devonport held in early March, the event will now be staged as part of a massive day of sports events in Newcastle on Australia Day.
To allow the free flow of traffic past Queens Wharf on Australia Day morning, the event will be staged around the freshly completed Super Cars pit lane and Nobbys area and feature a multi – laps course which is idea for spectators.
While not normally viable as a stand along event, due to the generosity of the City of Newcastle and local organisers H Events, Newcastle can host the regions second international Paratriathlon, with local paratriathlete Lauren Parker the hot favourite in her classification. Parker starts her Olympic selection this weekend in Tokyo at the Olympic Test event.
The Paratriathlon event will be staged at 7.30am on Sunday 26 Jan. The athletes complete a 750m swim, 20km cycle or hand cycle and 5km run or racing wheelchair. The course includes a harbour swim from near customs house jetty, cycle course including harbour/beach roads between Watt St and Zarra St, and a run leg lining up along the Harbour and Horseshoe Beach.
There are 4 main classifications of Wheelchair, Amputee, Vision impaired and neurological impairment. Athletes will gain substantial points towards the World Cup racing and in particular will be a critical event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. .
The sport of Paratriathlon has taken off internationally since the inclusion in the Rio Olympics and recent Gold Coast commonwealth Games, where Lauren Parker earned a Bronze medal, just 12 months after her horrific accident.
The Australia Day Sports package will include the ParaTriathlon, Australia Day Fun Run and annual Across the Harbour Swim.
