Triathlon NSW is excited to launch our Athlete Development Pathway for 2020/21 season and beyond.
Our 3 tiered structure still remains: we are seeing great success in a model that encourages our Youth-aged athletes to continue a seasonal and multiple sport model. Our motto will continue to be: ‘Do Triathlon don’t be a Triathlete’. We want our Youth to develop essential skills including their physical literacy and strong motor patterns. It's difficult to do this if training exclusively in a linear-driven sport like Triathlon, despite it being a multi sport at its core. We encourage our youth members to join a club, train with their local accredited Triathlon Coach, compete in appropriate events and of course apply to join one of our Academy Programs. Fall in love with Triathlon, just don’t think you need to be a mini pro yet! There is plenty of evidence to suggest that in an endurance sport like ours, late specialisation will be to your advantage.
We are excited to introduce yet another Regional Academy program to the five who currently facilitate successful programs. The Northern Inland Academy of Sport has a history of producing athletes and we have a thriving club base, Schools with Triathlon programs and experienced Coaches in the Youth Junior space that makes NIAS an obvious choice for inclusion. See more info about the Regional Academies here.
Additionally, we have restructured our Talent ID Program which runs parallel to the Regional Academy Programs. Essentially becoming a 7th Academy program, the ROSTA (acronym for Rest of State Triathlon Academy) will capture all NSW age eligible athletes who do not fall within one of the 6 other Regional Academy of Sport programs, ensuring that we offer our first tier of Pathway athletes skill-based clinics and racing opportunities regardless of your NSW residential address. This change now means more athletes across NSW have the ability to access our Academy structure, more coaches have the opportunity to work within the academy environment and develop their skills, knowledge and awareness.
Our TNSW Emerging Talent Squad will primarily target our ITU Junior athletes with Training and Race Camp experiences. This level will rightly wear the TNSW Trisuit and see a focus on building more advanced tactical and technical skills whilst developing a level of robustness and behavioural attributes that will equip them to better handle the full time training demands post-high school and - importantly - better manage the life demands of education, career, family and their own wellbeing and welfare.
Our 3rd tier is our U23 Development Squad. It is often a massive jump for our Juniors to leave school and head straight into the world of professional racing. This is the stage where many find the lack of support and guidance overwhelming and we lose quality athletes to the sport. In the last 3 years athletes from this Squad have medalled at World Championships and won National U23 Sprint titles, more than justifying the creation of the squad. Importantly, it gives our first and second year U23’s time and space to establish a training environment to suit them, settle into University and potentially life out of home, all whilst training to develop their professional career in sport and racing professionally around the world.
There are plenty more exciting announcements to come over the coming weeks/months with our Pathway program and we urge every young athlete to update their membership and apply to be a part of the development pathway.
