2019 Triathlon NSW Club Championships wrap up

For those who made the trip to Orange, for the 2019 Triathlon NSW Club Championships, we chose a great place to spend the weekend, as we selected the one town in the entire state that wasn’t getting soaked in rain!

As summed up by the Mayor of Orange, Reg Kidd, the rain and winds seemed to circle Orange and dump everywhere except our event and we had perfect weather and great conditions.

However the lack of rain was not confined to just this weekend, and the serious drought that has engulfed the state has hit the Central West harder than many other regions. The unfortunate consequence for us was a last minute format change being forced upon us due a dangerous Blue Green Algae outbreak. But as they say, the show much go on, so a change from ‘Triathlon’ to ‘Duathlon’ was forced upon us.

Irrespective, Triathlon NSW would again like to pay tribute to the tremendous support from Orange City Council and Orange Triathlon Club in making this event happen, and our thoughts go out to everyone who have been dealing with the drought and had their lives deeply impacted.

As a wise individual said, upon hearing of the news regarding the shift in format and cancellation of the swim, ‘If this is the biggest impact the drought has had on your life, the simple cancellation of a swim in a reservoir, you should count yourself lucky’.

A solid turnout across the event and a slight increase in athletes (just below 800) from 2018. We also welcomed over 150 volunteers and a Technical Team of 18, led by Grant Holman (Technical Delegate), Barry Alderton (Race Referee), Cathy Ross (Chief Race Official), Gordon McKenna (Assistant Technical Delegate) and Sarah Maguire (Assistant Race Referee).

This was also the third successive year where juniors were included in the make-up of the Triathlon NSW Club Championships and we are very proud to ensure that we are now offering an event for all our members across the state.

A huge amount of praise must be extended to our Race Director Partner, Elite Energy, who delivered a terrific experience for all participants and spectators.

Now, onto the winners…

A huge congratulations must go to the Hills Tri Club for winning their third Division 1. The podium rounded out with Balmoral Triathlon Club and the Warringah Triathlon Club. Concerns were raised about the possibility of even getting every athlete and volunteer who represented the Hills Tri Club onto the stage, having the largest team at the event.

Balmoral Triathlon Club will take home the positive that they have closed the gap between themselves and the Hills Tri Club this year, which will give them confidence with a view to 2020.

In the Division 2 category, Orange Triathlon Club once again put their home ground advantage to good use to win for the third year in a row. They claimed victory over Sydney Triathlon Group who will be hungrier then ever being on the podium for the past two years, but not tasting the sweet nectar of victory.

In Division 3, Kiama Coasters dominated once again to take out that category making it two years in a row for South Coast Club. They were joined on the podium by Macarthur Triathlon Club and Bathurst Triathlon Club, both of whom have had a very strong year, with Bathurst Tri Club, fresh of their excellent showing in the Central West Interclub Series and Macarthur Triathlon Club also sitting third in the Sydney South West Interclub Series, behind two powerhouses of the sport, Hills and Cronulla.

Last but certainly not least, the Junior Division had a back to back victory by the Hills Triathlon Club, but the event’s feel good story will remain the Shellharbour Triathlon Club, whose meteoric growth in the juniors left them second on the podium, and champing at the bit to get back in 2020 and knock the top dog off the pedestal! Watch out for those Green Gremlins who are hungry for victory and plan to come back bigger and better then ever next year.
