After 23 years being Newcastle and the Hunter’s most successful triathlon event for both serious and novice participants, the 2016 Sparke Helmore Triathlon Festival is going ‘back to the future’. The main compound and finish line are moving back to Nobby’s, Camp Shortland. There will be a Sports Expo and activities including Crossfit Origin Charity Challenge on Saturday 5 March. All triathlon events will be staged on Sunday 6 March.
“One of the main goals of this event is to raise funds for the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI),” says Event Director Paul Humphreys. The triathlon has already raised over $450,000 for various charities since it started in 1994.
In addition to the excitement of the triathlon, the event will be a fun day out with the family, including live music, carnival rides, face painting and Post-race entertainment. It is expected there will be around 5,000 spectators, in addition to the 2,000+ participants. The popularity of this event is partly due to the great course that showcases the beaches and foreshore of Newcastle. It is also due to the focus on business and open relay team participation.
The 2016 format will include event distances for all levels, with Olympic, Sprint and Enticer triathlon distances, a children’s aquathlon (swim/run) and also an improved version of the NSW State Sprint Relay Triathlon Championships, as a feature event. The triathlon schedule is as follows:
6.45am Olympic Distance 1500m swim 40km ride 10km run
8.00am Junior Aquathlon 150 or 250m swim and 1 or 2 km run
9.00am Sprint Distance 500m swim 19.5km ride 5km run
10.30am Foreshore Enticer 300m swim 15km ride 4km run
12.30am Sprint Team Relays 300m swim 5km ride 1.5 km run
The event also works with Newcastle Triathlon Club to host the Newcastle Foreshore Triathlon, formerly staged in February. “It’s a great win for Newcastle,” says Event Director Paul Humphreys. “This event is now one of the biggest triathlon events in NSW and really puts the area on the national and international triathlon map.”
The event thanks its many event sponsors, in particular Sparke Helmore Lawyers, NBN Television, The City of Newcastle, NHS Plasterboard, GHD, Eyeline, Ted’s Bike Shop, Merida Bikes, Coal Services, 2HD, NewFM, The Newcastle Herald, Broadley Signs and Hunter Valley Steel.
