23rd annual Quarry Mining Maitland Triathlon
As the COVID pandemic slowly causes the cancellation of event after event, organisers of the annual Maitland Triathlon have taken a ‘pre-emptive strike’ to secure the event for 2021.
Previously set to take place on Sun 7 November, event organiser Paul Humphreys of H Events, says "our previous date was just a bit too close for what ‘might’ be a point we can stage community sports events. The 70% ‘road map’ does not allow events like ours to happen, we will need to get to 80%+. We therefore have moved to Sun 12 Dec to give ourselves and our participants some breathing space. As a State Championship event and qualifier for the World Age Group Championships, we have people from QLD, VIC and SA entered. They need some security. We must also order $20,000 worth of collateral and pay for everything in advance. It’s a balancing act with ‘no net’".
Set along the Hunter River in the historic township of Morpeth, just 2 hours north of Sydney, the event offers Long, Standard and Sprint distance events. The swim is in the river, the 20km looped cycle course heads through the village and into lush farmland and the 2.5km looped run cements the events ‘country’ status with no shortage of cows on course!
The event is expected to be a sell out. with COVID restrictions likely reducing the available event numbers. Local Mining and Construction company Quarry Mining has again become the major sponsor of the event. The business has also entered a large contingent of employees and customers in the event - Quarry Mining has a huge commitment to the health and fitness of their staff and the community at large.
With the support of Just Dig Deeper Coaching, the event has secured $5,500 in prize money, that will attract a solid field of pro and elite amateur triathletes to Maitland.
Events on offer:
- 6.45am - Long Distance with 2000m swim, 60km ride and 15km run.
- 7.05am - Olympic Distance with 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run
- 7.25am - Sprint Distance with 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run
*relay teams welcome.
Organisers are looking forward to making this triathlon the best ever, albeit with COVID limitation. The new race compound and boat ramp will allow extra space to comply with COVID rules. There is also plenty to do in Morpeth village after the race.
