Last weekend saw over 170 of NSW and ACT’s strongest and finest triathletes making the annual pilgrimage across the Great Dividing Range to the Central West mecca of triathlon known as Orange, NSW. This event featured the TNSW Super Sprint Individual State Championships, Round 3 of the Billigence Pathway Championships and the Mixed Relay on Sunday, which saw teams of four tearing around the Super Sprint Course.
Proudly hosted by Orange Triathlon Club, the two-day festival of all things multisport began with an aquathon, Enduro style event and a super sprint heat. The Non drafting athletes and younger athletes were also included, with events that ensured all junior member could take part in the weekend.
As the sun started to set on Saturday, after a delayed start to allow for the temperature to drop, our U23, Junior and Youth athletes toed the line for their draft legal finals. What makes this competition unique is the mixed gender blending, which maximises competition and drafting opportunities.
To say the A-Final was hotly contested was an understatement, and for those who were lucky enough to be out on course, spectators was privileged to see some amazing athletes in action. No doubt the current and future stars of our sport, showing off all the skills and hard work they’ve put in over winter.
Triathlon NSW extends our thanks to Phil Tudor and the entire volunteer workforce of the Orange Triathlon Club for once again conducting a smooth and seamlessly event, worthy of a state title.
Thank you also to Billigence, our series sponsor; and to the Academy coaches who once again supported the event by bringing their full teams, Marg George for attending as Technical Official and all the parents for a tough but worthwhile weekend.
Join us in congratulating the winners:

Sunday morning saw the TNSW Mixed Relay State Championships.
Whilst a state title was on the line, this event also doubled as the selection race for the No. 1 Property Development Insights Mixed Relay Teams across Youth, Junior and U23.
Triathlon NSW announced this exciting new partnership with Property Development Insights last week. Property Development Insights, is delighted to be the inaugural sponsor of the Tri NSW Youth / Junior / U23 Elite Mixed Relay Teams, to support young triathletes in their future quest for international and Olympic medals in this fast and furious race format.
The Team selections focussed on speed and skill execution, given the critical role that transitions play in team success at an international level. Whilst our development athletes may make this up if highly conditioned or more physically mature, we have now established a standard rewarding athletes and coaches who emphasis skill acquisition in their daily training environment.
Mick Delamotte, TNSW Coach and Education Pathway Manager stated, ‘We are rewarding our development athletes who are able to execute skills at speed, under fatigue, in race conditions, repeatedly. Some of our Youth Athletes are hitting transitions as good if not better than I have ever seen in any WTS event. The swim, bike & run speed will come in time, but for now - make the clutch play in the transition zone and be rewarded for it.
We have been challenging our Pathway athletes to acquire new skills, develop and refine current skills & do so when it matters most. Our Pathway Coaches are now focusing more heavily on this in training now and athletes are being selected because of it. I am excited by the quality of athletes making up our teams. Our Youth Team is represented by athletes in 4 Regional Academy Programs across NSW whilst our ITU Junior & U23 Teams are made up of Sydney & Regional athletes.’
TNSW looks forward to providing these athletes and their home coaches with a MR specific camp that will focus on the technical and tactical components of the event to provide greater insight and understanding, in anticipation of them competing in the Australian Youth & Junior Mixed Relay Championship in Canberra (17th January), and the Triathlon Australia MTR invitational event, currently penciled in for June 2021 for our Junior & U23 Teams.
The team was selected as per the selection policy, released in October.
Also, the team will receive a unique and originally designed Triathlon Suit and Team Polo, to ensure they look and feel like the No. 1 NSW team. The PDI logo will be proudly displayed in their apparel, and the teams will be known as the
- ‘Property Development Insights’ TNSW No. 1 Youth Mixed Relay Team
- ‘Property Development Insights’ TNSW No. 1 Junior Mixed Relay Team
- Property Development Insights’ TNSW No. 1 U23 Mixed Relay Team
The suit design has been inspired by a local indigenous artist Kylie Tarleton who is a from the Wiradjuri land. Our No.1 NSW Team is being chosen on Wiradjuri Land & our Tri suit will acknowledge this.
Kylie provided the platypus design, which is a piece from her private collection, and it represents the totem of Orange, the Biladurang! (Wiradjuri for platypus).
The following athletes have been officially selected in the team.
