Wallabies' women ready to race

One of the common misconceptions of triathlon is that it is dominated by athletic men who solely compete in Ironman events. Bathurst Wallabies Triathlon Club has set out to challenge this vision with their Women for Tri race, now in its second year.

“Last year we got over 100 women come and participate so we decided to do it again,” says Wallabies’ President, Richard Blackie. “We have club members who will [compete] and help people who are doing it for the first time, they will be bringing up the field so no one is left at the back.”

The December 1st event, sponsored by the Cityfit Fitness Club in Bathurst, is free and open to all women who would like to compete. Modifications have been made to the race course to encourage the participants to feel comfortable and have fun.

“The swim is a rolling start [and] is in an ‘M’ shape so people are not swimming back round on each other,” explains Blackie. “For the cycle leg, we will have marshals to help people who are not so confident.”

To finish off, the run is a beautiful course around the river, and there is no cut-off time for the race, encouraging all abilities to participate.

In preparation for the event, Cityfit has been running an eight week training program including strength and conditioning, cycling and swimming sessions. These popular sessions have ensured the women are ready to undertake the 200m swim, 16km cycle and 2.5km run on Sunday.

Bathurst Women Only Race 2

If supporting new and past female participants to race in a triathlon wasn’t enough, the Wallabies are also using the event to raise money for the Bathurst Women’s and Children’s Refuge.

The Women for Tri race starts this Sunday December 2nd at 9am at the Manning Aquatic Centre in Bathurst. It will be a great opportunity to train up Wallabies members for upcoming Central West Interclub Series races, as they stand in third place behind the Orange Piranhas and Mudgee Red Devils.
