Triathlon NSW Development Pathway

The key objective of Triathlon NSW Development Pathway is to be fully aligned with the National Athlete Pathway Framework for High Performance through skills progression.

The Development Pathway is a tiered structure built from the grassroots programs of TRYStars and state wide Youth and Junior programs. It provides support to young athletes and their home programs to develop skills in the draft legal format of the sport of Triathlon.

Triathlon NSW supports four levels of development to assist identified athletes from Club and individually coached programs to the level where, based on talent and performance, they may be eventually selected into Triathlon Australia’s National Talent Academy, or beyond with NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) or Australian institute of Sport (AIS) support.

National performance standards

For more than ten years, Triathlon Australia (TA) High Performance program has recommended that states adopt standard swim, bike and run time trials for ITU Junior and U23 athletes.

The Triathlon Australia National Performance Standards (NPS) have been updated over the years.

The NPS distances/protocols for ITU Youth (13-16 years), ITU Junior (17-19 years) and ITU U/23 (20-23 years) in 2016/2017 are:

ITU U23 (20-23yrs)

ITU JUNIOR (17-19yrs)

ITU YOUTH A (15 & 16yrs)

ITU YOUTH B (13 & 14yrs)

Triathlon NSW with the support of home coaching environments are facilitating Swim & Run time trials for the purposes of posting times that are often used as part of the selection of National U/23 & Junior Teams, National Development Camp selections, National Talent Academy Selection and NSW Development Program selection. The swim & run TT's also act as one of the Talent identification indicators for new and emerging athletes from other sports.

The below TT's have been selected and approved as TT opportunities:
  • 12 November - Swim TT @ Charlestown Pool 7:30am - Pool entry cost only
  • 12 November - Run TT @ Glendale Track (after pool session) - no cost
  • 29 November - Swim TT @ Sutherland Leisure Centre 6:00pm - pool entry cost only
  • 3 December - Swim TT @ Atmosphere Health & Fitness 11:15am - pool entry cost only
  • 3 December - Run TT @ Blacktown International Sports Park 7:00pm - no cost
  • 8 December - Run TT @ Barden Ridge 6:00pm - no cost
  • 31 January - Swim TT @ Sutherland Leisure Centre 6:00pm - pool entry costs only

TNSW also suggests athlete's look at submitting official swim or run meet times as an alternative to the above in order to satisfy the NPS requirements.
