With Christmas on our door again, it is a time for a reflection on the year that was.
The 2015/16 Triathlon season ended very strongly, with overall race participation up 9% on the season before. This year many of our participants achieved personal best results, and for some, 2016 was the year they first participated in a Triathlon all together. You all should be proud of your achievements.
While growth in participation is very encouraging, it must be balanced against an overall increase in the total number of events being held. Our Board is particularly mindful that with an increasing number of events, combined with the rising event costs, individual event viability is made more difficult to achieve.
Another trend our Board is monitoring with interest is one of actively competing Triathletes not joining our fantastic clubs. Club membership is the lifeblood of our sport. More members translate to a better supported sport. So why don’t you make 2017 the year you member-up and help us build the multisport scene in South Australia.
2016 saw the addition of Jesse Mortensen to act for Jane Roads whilst she took maternity leave. Jane has now confirmed she is moving on from Triathlon permanently, so we want to thank Jane for her tireless efforts, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. We also want to congratulate Jesse who has now been permanently appointed as Executive Director.
As we look towards 2017, I’d like to share some key strategic themes that will drive the work of our association through the new year
• We aim to better support our clubs to develop and promote an environment of achievement, enjoyment and belonging
• Provide growth opportunities for our coaches, who will develop our next generation of triathletes
• Work with our race director network to host exciting, challenging, entertaining and safe multisport experiences through summer and winter for all levels, notice to elite, long course to mini, and
• Establish strong relationships with strategic partners to build sustainable platforms to develop our sport.
From all the staff and Directors of Triathlon South Australia, have a safe and merry Christmas and we’ll see you at the races!
