What an exciting time to be part of our triathlon community! A revamped 2019 / 2020 season calendar is locked away, and winter racing is in full swing.
I sometimes hear people ask me what the value of membership is. My answer is to reflect on the achievements our association has secured in the past season.
Our membership is the foundation of our strong community, from individuals to clubs, and state body to national body. Last season alone we had some 5,000 unique individual participants locally in our sport. For this number, we had under 800 members across 12 Clubs in South Australia.
That membership represents circa $85,000 injection into our sport, Triathlon SA receives a few cents over $70,000 of that.
Locally we’ve turned that member investment into an overall local contribution to our sport of over $275,000. This is through hard fought government funding, program and event revenue and growing corporate partnerships.
The initial $70,000 member investment has helped our sport to navigate the retirement of the longest serving race director in SA history, support all other race director and races, run events, provided support to clubs, coaches, answer member inquires, run a junior athlete pathway program, support school participation and promote our sport in new and innovative ways.
The remaining $15,000 member investment goes to our national body, Triathlon Australia. This provides us support and access to many critical systems including event sanctioning and safety, training, support and management coaches and technical officials, an athlete pathway program to qualify to represent our country at World Championships and manage member protection and insurance. These are just some of the day in day out functions provided to support the State entities to do their job day in day out. Our small office couldn’t do our job as well as we do it without the support of our National team.
You may have recently seen that our local team is growing. The new one year Member Services Officer role will expand our local office to three and will be pivotal supporting and growing our membership base and sport into the future. This new role has been created through the hard work and tenacity of our Executive Director Jesse Mortensen and immediate past President Garth Tierney. Under Garth’s leadership, we’ve navigated through some difficult times of change, successfully coming out in a strong sustainable position with a promising future for our sport
We can always do better, we must always do better. But we’re also extremely proud of what we’ve achieved to date and our team is excited for the future.
For those that have renewed their membership, we thank you. For those thinking about joining one of our amazing clubs, we encourage you to join our community. You won’t regret it!
See you at the races
