The 2017 Sam White Memorial Aquathlon is just 6 weeks away, and as this event is our SA Aquathlon Championships and Race 5 of the TITAN State Series It’s a key event on the calendar.
Our race Director Malcolm Robertson of Event Strategies shares news on the events future.
The 2017 Sam White Memorial Aquathlons will be the last staging of this sentimental event. Sam’s family and Event Strategies have agreed that, given Sam’s life support was turned off on his 29th birthday, it’s fitting to close after 29 years and with this 30th event. Event Strategies’ Malcolm Robertson and one of Sam’s brothers Paul, had this to say:
“We want to sincerely thank all in the triathlon and surf lifesaving community, particularly members of Triathlon South Australia who have supported this event for so many years despite it always falling between Xmas and New Year at Glenelg, a time when most athletes schedule a break from training and racing. This location and time were chosen by Sam when he organized this same event before his death, so it has always been important for us to continue this tradition. Those who knew Sam will appreciate that this event has helped us remember him and the enormous contribution he made to SA triathlon in its pioneering days, however it also forces us to remember the tragic circumstances of his death. They will understand the grief that comes from this, how after 29 years it is still heartfelt, and why ending the event will help bring closure.
Sam will continue to be remembered through his support of the Secondary Schools Triathlons, and other celebrations of his life.”
