South Australian team Captain Emily Steven has had a breakthrough performance at the 2018 Australian School Sports Triathlon Championships to claim a comprehensive win, giving Emily her the honor of being named the Australian Schools Triathlon National Champion.
Exiting the water 7th this landed her in the lead bike pack. Working hard to keep her position in the draft legal event, Emily used her experience racing the Australian Youth and Junior series all summer to her advantage. this resulted in her producing the fastest run split of the race to claim 1st and the national title by over 40 seconds from the strong WA Duo of Jasmine Greaves and Rachael Edwards.
Emily's coach Ross Young says "It was an amazing win. the windy conditions made the bike leg extra technical, with the girls showing great bike handling skills to navigate the course with the windy conditions, and then and the first two kilometers of the run were directly into a strong headwind which really took it out of the athletes. Emily executed her race plan to perfection, and when she hit the afterburners at the run turnaround we knew no-one would be able to go with her. it's a great reward for such an excellent season."
