Triathlon South Australia Virtual Time Trial is HERE
When: Sunday April 19th – 8:00am South Australian Time
Cost: free to Zwift subscribers or users on a free trial
Triathlon SA is proud to offer a Virtual 17.3km Time Trial moderated and coordinated Zwift virtual bike ride on Sunday the 19th of April. Participants can ride as long as they wish after and stop whenever they feel they have had enough. As long as you start together in one of the club meet-up, you’re in the group.
Why are we doing this?
We are a community, and although we can’t see each other right now due to social isolation measures associated with COVID-19, it doesn’t mean we can’t help. Through a shared group ride and chat, we can talk, we can smile, we can listen. We want to be clear that the best people to tell you how to train during this time are your coaches, and Triathlon SA’s role is not to take valuable work away from those coaches. This forum is an opportunity to provide positive mental health through a group ride in Zwift. For detailed and personalised fitness plans during this time, <click here> to access the list of accredited Triathlon Australia coaches in your area.
Using the Zwift “meetup” function, each club will create a meetup at 8:00am Sunday the 19th of April. Detailed instructions are being sent to each club. The course location is to be Watopia –Tempus Fugit
The meetup function can accommodate up to 50 riders in each meetup, so in an effort to accommodate as many riders as possible, the ride will be coordinated through each club. By each club creating their own Zwift meetup, scheduled for 8:00am Sunday the 19th of April, the Tempus Fugit course, we are able to exceed the 50-rider maximum (i.e. Lakers can have up to 50, Meteors can have up to 50, Trikings 50, Tempo 50, Riverland 50 and so on). The overall communicatiojn coordination during the ride will be achieved through “ZOOM” which run in the background on your preferred device while you ride on Zwift. It is recommended to jump on 10-15minutes earlier to warm up and stay on after the 17.3km TIme Trial as long as you want. There is no rules with bikes choice (road bike or TT bike function on Zwift), but please note there is drafting benefits if you are on a road bike.
Sounds great! How do I do this?
For club members, your club will announce through their communication channels who their nominated person is to set up their club Zwift ride. Once known, you are to open the Zwift companion app and “follow” the clubs Zwift ride coordinator. Once you have followed them, they will be able to add you to meetups.
I’m part of a club but I haven’t got an invite
Talk to your club committee, your clubs nominated Zwift ride coordinator or talk to Jason and Jesse in the TriSA office via (08) 8363 9133 and we’ll assist you to be added to the list. Failing that, join in using the instructions for a non-member and you’ll be able to ride, you just won’t be in the “stay together” function.
The legal part
All sanctioned events in Australia have ceased during the COVID-19 pandemic. We as triathletes are a competitive bunch and we could turn dinner in to a competiton if we wanted to - However, we stress that Triathlon South Australia is not hosting races. We're providing a simulated training and social communication channel to share the experience. Our Triathlon Australia member insurance remains valid for all training where individuals are complying with federal and state legislation regarding social distancing, and this "event" is no exception. We will not be tabulating results, there will be no winners declared through official channels. We love to see everyones training pain-face and we're coordinating a time and place where members can share that experience. Should non members choose to join these zwift rides then they do so at their own risk and under the clear understanding that as they are not members they hold no training / personal accident insurance and Triathlon South Australia owes no duty of care apart from a clear moderation of our voice chat channel to ensure no inappropriate language is used.
What equipment do I need?
If you have a smart trainer that's identified <here> then watch this video to see how to set up Zwift
If you don't have a smart trainer, watch this video to learn how to get set up without. You'll need a Bluetooth speed and cadence sensor.
What about the voice chat?
We will be using Discord for our vitual rides unless stated otherwise. Please << CLICK HERE>> for instructions on how to use Discord. Please stay on mute unless talking in order to keep our voice channel from being filled with the sounds of breathing, fans and trainers. Keeping your phone in your back-jersey pocket during this situation is often not useful as it restricts you accessing it for mute / unmute function.
Clubs are to create their own meetup for their club at the same date/time/course as the one stipulated above. Clubs are to nominate a ride leader and then all club members are to "follow" the ride leader through the Zwift companion app. Once this is done, the ride leader is able to invite members to the meetup. All club meetups will be commence at the same location and will mimic the qualities of one big meetup. If ride leaders require assistance, please discuss with Jesse and Jason in the TriSA office.
