2023 Australian Age Group Team Selection Policy FAQs

1. Does the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team Selection Policies change?

YES - Please do not print the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team Selection Policy as these policies are subject to change throughout the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team selection period. Changes will be noted on the final page/ last page of the selection policies as an amendment. It is the athlete's individual responsibility to check the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team Selection Policy and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Long Distance Duathlon Team Selection Policy regularly to ensure they are aware of any changes and updates to the selection policy throughout the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team selection period.

2. Why should I read the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team Selection Policy?

The selection policies detail the process and criteria by which Triathlon Australia will select its 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and Long Distance Duathlon Teams. The selection policies outline how many athletes TA may select, how many selection races athlete's need to compete in, how the selection points system works, how to express interest for the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and Long Distance Duathlon Team etc.

3. Can I be selected to the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team as a permanent resident?

NO - Only Australian Citizens may seek selection for the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Teams. 2023 Australian Age Group Team selected athletes will need to provide Triathlon Australia proof of your Australian Citizenship at least 16 weeks prior to the start of the relevant 2023 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships.

4. Do I need to be a certain age to compete at the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships?

YES - you must be a certain age to compete in certain events at the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon World Championships.

Athletes must be 15 years old as of the 31st of December 2023
 to compete in the following events:

2023 World Triathlon Age Group Mixed Team Relay (Draft Legal) World Championships - Hamburg, Germany
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Super Sprint Distance Triathlon World Championships - Pontevedra, Spain

Athletes must be 16 years old as of the 31st of December 2023 to compete in the following events:

2023 World Triathlon Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) World Championships - Hamburg, Germany
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Sprint Distance Duathlon (Draft Legal) World Championships – Ibiza, Spain.
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Aquathlon World Championships – Ibiza, Spain

Athletes must be 18 years old as of the 31st of December 2023 to compete in the following events:

2023 World Triathlon Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon World Championships - Pontevedra, Spain
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Standard Distance Aquabike World Championships - Pontevedra, Spain
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Standard Distance Duathlon World Championships – Ibiza, Spain
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Cross Triathlon World Championships – Ibiza, Spain
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Aquabike World Championships – Ibiza, Spain
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Long Distance Triathlon World Championships – Ibiza, Spain
2023 World Triathlon Age Group Long Distance Duathlon World Championships - Zofingen, Switzerland

5. What happens if I cannot race at the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team National Selection Events?

The 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy and the 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team Selection Policy details how athletes who cannot race in a 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team National Selection Event may apply for selection to the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team. Please read the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team Selection Policy (Selection Policy Clause G.4 Australian’s Residing Overseas) and (Selection Policy G.5 Discretionary Selections).

6. How many age group athletes can Triathlon Australia select to the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and Long Distance Duathlon Teams?

2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team – Sprint Distance Triathlon, Mixed Team Relay, Standard Distance Triathlon, Super Sprint Triathlon and Standard Distance Aquabike:

2023 World Triathlon Race Competition Rules stipulate that Triathlon Australia may nominate a maximum of 20 males and 20 females in each age group category of the: 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) World Championships and the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon, Super Sprint Triathlon and Standard Distance Aquabike World Championships.

Age group categories start at 15-19 (Super Sprint Triathlon - Non-Draft Legal) 16-19 (Sprint Distance Triathlon – Draft Legal) 18-19 (Standard Distance Triathlon – Non-Draft Legal and Standard Distance Aquabike – Non-Draft Legal) and then progress in five-year blocks e.g., 20 - 24; 25 - 29 (Super Sprint Triathlon – Non-Draft Legal, Sprint Distance Triathlon - Draft Legal, Standard Distance Triathlon – Non-Draft Legal and Standard Distance Aquabike – Non-Draft Legal); for both men and women.

2023 World Triathlon Race Competition Rules stipulate that Triathlon Australia may nominate a maximum of 10 teams each comprised of 2 males and 2 females in each category of the: 2024 World Triathlon Age Group Mixed Team Relay (Draft Legal) World Championships.

Age group categories are 15-19 years, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 years and above.

Under the terms of the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy, the Triathlon Australia Age Group Committee is not required to select the maximum of 10 2023 Australian Age Group Mixed Team Relay Teams or 20 males and 20 females for all other events to the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team.

2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team – Sprint Distance Duathlon, Standard Distance Duathlon, Cross Duathlon, Cross Triathlon, Aquathlon, Aquabike and Long Distance Triathlon:

2023 World Triathlon Race Competition Rules stipulate that Triathlon Australia may nominate a maximum of 20 males and 20 females in each age group category of the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport World Championships.

Age group categories start at 16-19 (Aquathlon, Sprint Distance Duathlon – Draft Legal), 18-19 (Standard Distance Duathlon, Cross Triathlon, Aquabike, Long Distance Triathlon) and then progress in five-year blocks e.g., 20 - 24; 25 - 29 (Sprint Distance Duathlon, Standard Distance Duathlon, Aquathlon, Cross Triathlon, Aquabike, Long Distance Triathlon); for both men and women.

Under the terms of the 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team Selection Policy, the Triathlon Australia Age Group Committee is not required to select the maximum of 20 males and 20 females to the 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team. Final team numbers are at the absolute discretion of the Triathlon Australia Age Group Committee.

2023 Australian Age Group Team National Selection Events FAQs

1. How many 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and Multisport Team National Selection Events should I compete in?

The Triathlon Australia National Age Group Manager will make selections in priority order per the highest accumulated selection points based on the best 3 results in the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team National Selection Events. Detailed information can be found in the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Selection Policy Clause G3(a) and the 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team Selection Policy Clause G3(a).

Age group athletes can compete in as many individual 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team National Selection Events which they like. Triathlon Australia will only take the athletes best 3 race results from the athletes 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team National Selection Events. For example, an age group athlete can compete in 7 individual 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team Sprint Distance Triathlon selection events, Triathlon Australia will select the athletes best 3 race results from the 7 Sprint Distance Triathlon selection events which they raced in.

2. Can I enter and race in the open, elite, junior elite category at a 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team National Selection Event?

NO - Athletes will not be awarded selection points when they race a nominated selection race in the Open, Elite and or Junior Elite category. Athletes must race in your designated age group category on race day at the nominated selection events, for example you must enter and race the relevant 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team selection race in the male 40 to 44 age group category and not the OPEN category.

3. Can I be a Triathlon Australia Professional License Holder when racing at 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team National Selection Events?

NO - Athletes striving for 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team selection must not be the holder of a Triathlon Australia Professional License during the financial year in which the selection events are conducted.

4. Can I seek 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team selection in more than one event?

YES - Athletes can compete in more than one event at the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group World Triathlon Championships (Hamburg and Pontevedra) and or at the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport World Championships (Ibiza).

For example, an athlete can seek selection in the Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) and the Mixed Team Relay (Draft Legal) to be held in Hamburg, Germany.

For example, an athlete can seek selection in the Sprint Distance Duathlon (Draft Legal) and the Cross Triathlon to be held in Ibiza, Spain.

Multisport (Ibiza): Please note as the Age Group Aquabike and Age Group Long Distance Triathlon events will be held on the same day at the same time at the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport World Championships (Ibiza, Spain) athletes are unable to compete in both events.

5. Are you seeking selection in the 2023 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) Team and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Mixed Team Relay (Draft Legal) and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Duathlon (Draft Legal) Team - Are the selection events for these events draft legal in Australia? Do I need a draft legal race license to compete in selection races in Australia?

Age Group athletes racing in Australia at 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team National Selection Events do not need to apply for a draft legal race license. The only athletes who must apply in Australia for a draft legal race license are the elite junior high performance pathway athletes. 

2023 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon Team and 2023 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Duathlon Team National Selection Events are NON - Draft Legal. Eligible Australian age group athletes may be selected to the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team without completing a Draft Legal selection race during the nominated 2023 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon and or Sprint Distance Duathlon Team National Selection Series.

If you are selected to the 2023 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) Team and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Mixed Team Relay (Draft Legal) and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Duathlon (Draft Legal) Team you will need to meet strict World Triathlon Equipment Rules when racing at the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships. World Triathlon Age Group Draft Legal Equipment Rules can be located on page 40 of the World Triathlon Competition Rules. World Triathlon do not require age group athletes to be certified draft legal before competing at the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships.

6. 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport World Championships (Medical Requirements) 4 Age Group Races - Ibiza, Spain?

If an athlete is selected in 5 race distances (World Triathlon Multisport Legend) World Triathlon has mandated that these athletes complete a special medical form called the PPE. Information of this form can be located through this link.

Any individual 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team athlete who has been selected in 5 or more race distances will have to complete the World Triathlon PPE medical form and send this completed form, including all required documentation through to Triathlon Australia at least 16 weeks before the start of the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport World Championships (Ibiza, Spain).

7. What happens if I have only competed in 2023 Australian Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon Team Selection Events, but I would also like to seek selection in the 2023 Australian Age Group Super Sprint Triathlon Team and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Standard Distance Aquabike Team?

Athletes who have completed 2023 Australian Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon Team Selection Events but have not completed 2023 Australian Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon Team Selection Events and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Aquabike Team Selection Events and who would like to seek selection in the 2023 Australian Age Group Super Sprint Triathlon Team and or the 2023 Australian Age Group Standard Distance Aquabike Team are requested to complete an application for discretionary selection.

2023 Australian Age Group Team Expression of Interest FAQs

1. Do I need to be a Triathlon Australia member to express interest in the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team?

YES, you must be a current Relevant 2022/2023 Triathlon Australia member to apply for the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team. # Relevant Triathlon Australia Membership means a current annual Triathlon Australia membership in the full Standard and or Premium categories but excludes all Social and or Basic membership categories.

Age group athletes cannot express interest in the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team as a ONE DAY license holder.

2. Do I need to express interest for the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team before I compete in a National Selection Event?

NO - Triathlon Australia members do not need to complete an online team expression of interest before racing in a nominated 2023 Australian Age Group Team National Selection EventsThis allows Triathlon Australia members the opportunity to race throughout the season and see how they are performing in selection races before expressing interest for the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team.

3. Do I need to make more than one 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon and or Multisport Team expression of interest?

If you would like to seek selection in just one event e.g., the Standard Distance Triathlon event (Pontevedra), just make one online 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon Team expression of interest for the 2023 Australian Age Group Standard Distance Triathlon Team (Pontevedra).

If you would like to seek selection in more than one event e.g., the Standard Distance Duathlon event (Ibiza) and the Cross Triathlon event (Ibiza) you must make two individual separate 2023 Australian Age Group Multisport Team expression of interest for the 2023 Australian Age Group Standard Distance Duathlon Team (Ibiza) and then a separate individual expression of interest for the 2023 Australian Age Group Cross Triathlon Team (Ibiza).

Age group athletes may seek selection in one stand-alone 2023 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships for example the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Sprint Distance Duathlon (Draft Legal) and Cross Triathlon World Championships to be held in Ibiza, Spain.

Age group athletes may seek selection in one or more 2023 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships for example an age group athlete may seek selection in the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Sprint Distance Triathlon (Draft Legal) and Mixed Team Relay (Draft Legal) World Championships to be held in Hamburg and may seek selection in the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport World Championships to be held in Ibiza, Spain.

4. Will Triathlon Australia accept late 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team Expression of Interest?

NO - 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team Expression of Interest online applications will NOT be accepted under any circumstances after the noted close of expression of interest.

For the avoidance of doubt, this includes Australian athletes residing overseas who wish to be considered for selection, athletes who wish to be considered for discretionary selection and athletes who have gained automatic selection. If you have not completed an expression of interest online by the nominated deadline you will NOT be selected for the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team under any circumstances.

5. Do I need to pay an application fee when expressing interest online for the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team?

1. Athletes will pay a $75.00 Application Fee per each individual distance when notifying Triathlon Australia of their Expression of Interest for 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team selection online. 

2. If an athlete is not selected onto the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team $55.00 of their application fee will be refunded.

3. If an athlete is selected onto the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team and the athlete declines the position on the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team no part of the application fee will be refunded.

4. If an athlete is selected onto the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team and they accept their position on the team the $75.00 application fee will be deducted from the athletes overall 2023 Australian Age Group Team Athlete Contribution.

5. If the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Triathlon World Championships (Hamburg and Pontevedra) and or the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport World Championships (Ibiza)  and or the 2023 World Triathlon Age Group Long Distance Duathlon World Championships (Zofingen) are cancelled by World Triathlon and or the Local Organising Committee athletes will be refunded the $75.00 per individual application fee made to Triathlon Australia minus the Go Membership processing online fee.

You must be a current Relevant 2022/2023 Triathlon Australia member to apply for the 2023 Australian Age Group Triathlon, Multisport and or Long Distance Duathlon Team. # Relevant Triathlon Australia Membership means a current annual Triathlon Australia membership in the full Standard and or Premium categories but excludes all Social and or Basic membership categories.
