YOUTH AND JUNIOR ATHLETES Pathway
Triathlon Western Australia has a clear athlete pathway that moves athletes from a child (7-11) through to youth (12-15) to junior (16-19) and on to an under 23 athlete (20-22). This pathway way is diagramed below. The pathway allows athletes to self-select at any point to race either in the Performance Stream or Participation Stream based on their ability and desire.
The full athlete pathway is shown below.
PARTICIPATION STREAM
Athletes in this stream can compete / participate in triathlon based on age classification as outlined below:
- 12-13 (age on or before 31 December 2017)
- 14-15 (age on or before 31 December 2017)
- 16-19 (age on or before 31 December 2017)
- From the age of 20 onwards athletes move into adult age group competition/participation. Adult age groups are in five year increments as follows; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; and so on.
Age group triathlons can be competitive or just for fun depending on the ambition of the participating athlete. Each of the youth and junior age classifications has maximum approved race distances as set by Triathlon Australia (see below). The maximum races distances take into account the general level of maturation of the athlete at these ages and their physiological ability to handle these distances. There is no long term development advantage to athletes who race longer than the distances outlined below.
