Kids stay fit, healthy and smart with TRYstars!
Research has shown that sport and participation in general physical activity has a positive impact on children’s physical, social and mental health which is likely to extend into adolescence and adult life.
Structured activity allows kids to take advantage of the positive impacts of sport in a fun and safe environment. Triathlon NSW in partnership with Achieve Sports is conducting TRYStars program in Penrith, Sutherland and Terrey Hills from 30 July 2016.
Catering for 7-12 year olds, TRYStars encourages kids to get active through non-competitive SWIM, RIDE and RUN games and focuses on FUNdamental movement skills such as agility, balance, coordination, running and jumping. The program is delivered by local Triathlon Australia Accredited TRYstars Coaches and is a fun way for kids to be with friends, make new friends and stay active through the cooler months when other activities might have slowed or are in the off-season.
It is estimated that nearly three quarters of Australian children do not meet national daily physical activity recommendations. For health benefits, children aged 5–12 years should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day.
Research also increasingly suggests that increased participation in sport and other forms of physical activity lead to enhancement of information processing, memory, concentration, behaviour and academic achievement for children. This is because exercise can increase levels of a brain growth factor, stimulate nerve growth and increase blood flow to the brain.
As well as eight hours of action packed swim, bike and run fun, participants receive a pack which includes:
- bag, long sleeve rashie, elastic laces and swim cap
- discounted Triathlon Australia junior membership
- discount vouchers from local organisations
TRYStars programs ensure the right level of activity for different ages, offering two programs ‘Mini Stars’ for children aged 7 – 9 years old and ‘Super Stars’ for children aged 10-12 years old. Participants should be able to swim 50 metres and be able to cycle unaided without the use of training wheels.
Children are supervised at all times in and around water and all sessions are conducted in traffic-free environments. Coaches have first aid, asthma and analyhaxis certificates and a Working with Children check.
