We thank all of our Board members for their valuable insight and guidance, and their unwavering passion for all things triathlon. The following are our un-paid directors appointed in accordance with the Triathlon Queensland constitution.



Appointed to the Board in 2014, and elected as President in 2017, Mark Browne brings over 25 years of business experience to the table. Mark has a tertiary qualification in Engineering and Business and has held Executive positions in both the Infrastructure Construction and Defence industries, working for multinational companies including Boeing Defence and ABB Australia.

Mark’s key focus as President is the management of risk as well as the continued development of Triathlon at the club level. Mark is an active triathlete having first competed in 1995 and has represented Australia at two Age Group World Championships and multiple international events. Mark has been involved at the club level of the sport since his first race and has held positions including Club President during his 23 years as a triathlete.



Sarah Richmond has over 20 years experience within various aspects of the Accounting profession. Currently a Senior Manager at Nexia Brisbane, within the Business Advisory sector, Sarah's career has spanned across UK and Australia. 

Sarah has been a member of Triathlon Queensland for eight years and is currently an active member of Red Dog Triathlon Training, competing regularly as an age group triathlete. She recently represented Australia at the ITU World Championships on the Gold Coast.

Sarah joined the Board of Triathlon Queensland in 2018.




Appointed in October 2018, Toni Thornton brings considerable experience in corporate finance, having been an accomplished Company Director and worked in the field for over fifteen years. Toni brings a strategic commercial focus to the Triathlon Queensland Board, having held a number of senior positions at JBWere and Goldman Sachs. 

Toni's current directorships include Devcorp and Habitat Early Learning and she was previously a Board member and Audit Committee member of South Bank Corporation, Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation and Chair of the Strategic Advisory Group to RSL Queensland. Toni has more than ten years experience in audit at Board level, is a Responsible Executive with the ASX, holds Derivative and RG146 Accreditation and is a licenced real estate agent. She also completed an Accelerated Executive Management program through AGSM MBA (Australian School of Business), the Goldman Sachs JBWere Non-Profit Leadership Program and the Goldman Sachs Executive Director Leadership Program. 

Toni has significant leadership experience with not-for-profit organisations, advising a number of significant Queensland hospital groups and other well-known not-for-profit groups.

Toni has two active girls; a 9-year-old daughter who races triathlon and a 6-year-old who is about to start. She has always been a committed sports participant, including state representative at soccer and later in life through her participation in triathlon at both standard and 70.3 distance events. 



Paul Azzopardi has been a Board member since October 2016,  and brings a unique perspective aided by a wealth of first-hand experience and knowledge in the sporting environment.  Paul has been an avid triathlete for the past 23 years, racing a variety of distances and currently focusing on Ironman events.  As an accredited and practising triathlon coach, and a member of the Wilston-Grange Triathlon Club, Paul is fully invested in the athletic lifestyle.
Paul also works in Swimming Australia’s High Performance Unit as the Systems and Information Manager, and has expertise in the areas of business analysis and business development.  He also has experience working in project/change management roles for large corporate organisations.  Paul contributes to Triathlon Queensland in the areas of coaching development, participation and value for members of all ages.    



Lars was appointed to the Board in 2018.

Lars has a passion for triathlon, as a TA accredited Performance Coach, Technical Official and athlete. He is the owner of Bmee Movement, which is an exercise physiology, dietitian and triathlon coaching business on the Fraser Coast.

Lars is a community focused individual, implementing numerous charity projects, organising local not-for-profit events and supporting local school children as they enter the sport of triathlon. 

Lars is proud to be the regional voice for triathlon and is looking forward to being a positive contributor on the committee.


Cara was appointed to the Board in 2019.

A relative newcomer to the sport, Cara completed her first triathlon at Raby Bay Queensland Tri Series in October 2018 after signing up with her local tri club Carina Leagues Tri Club in August of that year, and now focuses on 70.3 distance events.

Cara is an experienced consultant with a history of working in the professional services and management consulting industries. She is a Chartered Accountant skilled in Internal Audit, Accounting, Tax, Financial Reporting, and Project Management.

She is passionate about promoting diversity and inclusion in triathlon, particularly in driving up female participation rates for the longer endurance events.

In her spare time, Cara is working to complete her MBA studies, and also works with animal rescue groups through fostering animals.




Appointed in November 2018, Hamish McKellar joined the Board as an independent director.

Hamish has over 20 years experience as a Corporate Lawyer and Corporate Secretary in medium-large companies and is currently General Counsel and Company Secretary at Queensland Airports Ltd, which owns and operates Gold Coast, Townsville, Mt Isa and Longreach Airports.

As a life-long supporter of sports, Hamish grew up participating in martial arts, then cycling as a young adult. He represented Australian National University at three successive University Games and represented Canberra Cycling Club at state and national level. 

Hamish is a fervent supporter of amateur sport as a foundation for building skills and resilience that transfer across to all aspects of life.
