Five-time Australian Intellectual Impairment champions Cameron Marshall and Georgia Powning have been named Australian Flag Bearers for this month’s 2025 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport Championships in Pontevedra, Spain.
The duo will proudly lead the Australian Age Group team into competition, also headlining a group of seven Inclusive Sports Training athletes representing the green and gold on the world stage.
The pair first represented Australia at last year’s World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Townsville, where Marshall finished in the top five of the 20–24 male age group in both the aquathlon and duathlon, and Powning placed seventh in the 25-29 female duathlon.
“I was really shocked and excited to find out that I was selected as one of the flag bearers,” Marshall said.
“It’s a huge honour to be a flag bearer and it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do since I first started competing for Australia.
“It will give me a big confidence boost that I will be leading out the whole Australian team in Spain with the eyes of the triathlon world on us.
“Whilst the events are individual it is great to be part of a team environment where athletes rally and support each other throughout the week.”
For Powning, being named a flag bearer has brought a new sense of pride and responsibility to her preparations.
“I am honoured and humbled to be chosen, and even though I have been training for this event all year it has suddenly become real now I know I have this added responsibility,” Powning said.
“I hope I don’t tangle the flag – maybe I should practice some flag holding too!
“As an intellectually impaired athlete it feels very inclusive to be part of the broader team.
“Usually most of the intellectually impaired athletes train together and only see the other competitors on race day.
“With this event we feel included for the duration of the event – wearing our uniform around town and knowing we are part of the best team in the competition – Australia!”
The 2025 World Triathlon Multisport Championships will be held from June 20–29 and will see athletes competing in various multisport events.
