Matt Hauser Wins Australia’s First World Triathlon Series Championship Title in 15 Years

Queensland’s Matt Hauser has won Australia’s first Men’s World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) Title in 20 years after an emphatic victory in front of a raucous crowd in Wollongong tonight.

The 27-year-old proved unstoppable at the WTCS Grand Final, claiming both the race victory and the overall title for the 2025 WTCS season.

Heading into the race, he only needed a podium finish to secure the overall championship, regardless of what his rivals did but he was clearly a man on a mission never relenting from the moment he started the 1.5km swim through the 40km cycle, and onto the 10km run winning by an incredible 34 seconds over his nearest rival and finishing in one hour 42.42 minutes.

With this dominant display, Hauser not only sealed the 2025 WTCS Title but also etched his name into the sport’s history books as the first athlete to win four WTCS events in a single season.

“It feels exactly a dream. The supporters out there, everyone who drove down from the Gold Coast and Hervey Bay – my girlfriend, my parents, my ex-coach Brian Harrington, who started the journey for me at Hervey Bay all the way to my current coach Dan Atkins who’s been with me for nine years now. I’m filled with gratitude for all my supporters out there,” he said.

“To do it on home soil, it’s quite amazing. I set myself a lofty goal this year and to do it on home soil is an absolute dream come true.”

“I lost a bit of aura there but I think I regained it towards the backend of the race. I just had to try and stay composed. I kept on telling myself to stay locked in. I knew it wasn’t over even though I had the 50 second gap. At the start of the run, I just knew I had to keep my head down – anything can happen. I’m overwhelmed with joy to get the job done,” Hauser said.

“It was painful but I think the crowd took all the pain away in the end. It just helped so much having the home crowd support. I knew it was going to be great out there with everyone but this definitely exceeded my expectations. It’s so awesome to see everyone out here supporting such a great sport and a great sport I love.”

“The roar of the crowd was absolutely amazing and then to cross the finish line and go straight to my loved ones – to Georgia, my girlfriend to mum and dad and her parents as well. I still just don’t know what to think – it’s just been a mad rush from then on till now. It’ll definitely take a little while to soak in but I’ll enjoy every second of it from now on in.”

Hauser is the first Aussie male to win the World Triathlon Championship Series Title ever and the first in 20 years since it transitioned from the ITU Triathlon one race annual Championship when Peter Robertson won in 2005 in Japan.

The last Aussie female to win a WTCS title was Emma Moffat who won on home soil in 2009 on the Gold Coast and in 2010 in Budapest Hungary.
