Australian Charlotte Derbyshire has won her first World Cup medal, claiming bronze at the Triathlon World Cup in Tongyeong, South Korea today.
The 24-year-old finished 17 seconds behind race leader Tilly Anema (GBR), with Diana Isakova (AIN) finishing in the silver medal position.
“I’m so happy and so emotional – I literally can’t believe it,” Derbyshire said.
“It was a really good race today, I had a really good swim which put me in a really good position and I’m starting to feel more confident now in my ability to do that.
“We had a nice little pack of eight on the bike which was great, and we all worked really well together to get a little gap on the second group that was coming.
“I was just thinking on the bike let’s see how my run legs go. I felt really good for the first lap and half, and then the next lap I was just holding on until the end.
“I really wanted to fight for that podium, and I’m really proud of myself for doing that today,” she said.
Fellow Aussie Kira Hedgeland rounded out the top 10 while Wollongong U23 World Champion Richelle Hill produced a solid 14th place finish.
In the men’s race, Brandon Copeland was the best placed Aussie finisher in 11th, Brayden Mercer crossing the line in 20th, and Lachlan Jones and Logan Campbell finishing 28th and 47th respectively.
