What happens when you keep showing up? You become a World Champion!
Representing Australia, NSW and Tomaree Triathlon Club, Mark Preston delivered a masterclass in composure, strength and experience to claim the 70-74 Aquabike World Championship category title in Wollongong. Racing on home soil, Mark produced what he proudly calls a “near perfect execution” sharing it was a performance built on smart preparation, race‑specific training and decades of dedication to the sport.
Mark believes the key to his winning form was simple: building swim strength and committing to race‑specific intervals across both swim and bike. With a clear plan and the discipline to follow it, Mark arrived in Wollongong ready to deliver his best race of the year, and he did exactly that!
But even with a World Champs title secured, the moment that meant the most wasn’t the medal. It was being able to race in front of the family and friends who lined the course, cheering him on every step of the way. Their support turned an already special day into something unforgettable.
With decades of experience, Mark’s pre‑race ritual is grounded in confidence and calm: “I tell myself I’ve done the work required, and that today will be my best ever race.”
It’s a mantra that clearly served him well in Wollongong.
His victory also carries a special connection to his club. Eight years ago, at Mark’s request, Tomaree Triathlon Club introduced Aquabike into its monthly club race schedule, long before major organisers began offering it widely. It was a way to keep him competing after his running days were behind him, and it ultimately paved the way for him to represent Australia in what was then a new and emerging discipline.
Now, standing atop the world stage, Mark’s journey has come full circle. His win is a celebration of resilience, adaptation and the power of community support. A proud moment for himself, family, his community of friends at Tomaree Triathlon Club, NSW and Australia.
Mark Preston is a World Champion and a shining example of what it means to keep showing up, keep evolving and keep racing with heart.
💚💛
