Matt Hauser has finished his 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series campaign in spectacular fashion, producing a thrilling sprint finish to claim victory at the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra.
The defending World Champion took to the start line knowing retaining his world title would be a challenge due to some crashes earlier in the season, but the Queenslander has never been one to back down from a challenge.
Hauser was among the leaders throughout the swim before quickly establishing himself in the front group on the bike, swapping turns at the front as the leaders powered around the fast and technical course through the streets of Pontevedra.
With his title rival Vasco Vilaça alongside him, Hauser remained perfectly positioned as the lead group carried an advantage of around 40 seconds over the chase into the second transition.
Hauser led out of T2 and immediately went to work, with Portuguese duo Vilaça and Ricardo Batista joining him at the front as the race for victory began to take shape.
Behind them, Olympic champion Alex Yee was storming through the field. Having started the run well behind the leaders, Yee rapidly erased the deficit and made contact with the front of the race heading into the final lap.
It set up a grandstand finish worthy of a World Championship Final.
With the finish line approaching, the battle ultimately came down to Hauser and Vilaça. The Australian refused to give an inch, finding one final surge before dramatically dipping at the line to edge his Portuguese rival in a photo finish.
The pair were awarded the same finishing time of 1:39:31, with Hauser taking the victory, Vilaça second and Yee completing the podium four seconds later. The win secured Hauser second place in the overall 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series standings, with Vilaça crowned World Champion.
While a second consecutive world title wasn’t to be, Hauser was proud to end his season on the top step and deliver when it mattered on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
“It’s amazing to be part of such a great event, what a showcase for triathlon. The last lap through old town was deafening. I didn’t get the back-to-back world title, but I did what I wanted to do today and that was to get the win.
“I didn’t want to lose a sprint finish to Vasco. I haven’t lost all year to him, so I wasn’t going to let him win today.
“I can take plenty of positives away from today, add this notch in my belt and move on to next year and onto LA in ’28.”
The victory brings Hauser‘s 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series campaign to a memorable close, with another huge performance on the world stage and his sights already turning towards what comes next. Luke Willian worked hard in the chasing bike group, eventually crossing the line 21st, securing 8th in the World Championship Series standings.
