David McEwan claimed a hat trick of Gold in the Gong!
David McEwan delivered one of the most dominant performances of the 2025 Age Group World Championships in Wollongong, capturing three gold medals – across the Standard Distance, Sprint Distance, and Mixed Team Relay events. Representing Hills Triathlon Club, David’s campaign was a masterclass in preparation, execution, and team spirit.
With the Standard Distance race scheduled first, David shared that he focused his training for this event, trusting that his fitness would carry him through the weekend. “I trained specifically for the Standard race and hoped that would flow into the Sprint,” he said. “Then I planned to have ‘fun’ – but still go all out – in the mixed relay.”
That strategy definitely paid off, with David taking the top step of the podium in all three events. But beyond the medals, one moment stood out: “Running down the finish chute in the Australian uniform with so many cheering Aussies lining the course, that was my proudest moment.”
When asked about his preparation, David shared he was supported by a strong network: his partner Linda, the team at Onebody Health & Fitness, Rainey Performance Coaching, Hills Triathlon Club, and countless training buddies. “Their support made all the difference,” he said.
His race-day routine is simple, effective: Oats, fruit, nuts, and yoghurt for breakfast, and an early arrival at transition to set up. As for tapering between events? “My taper for the Sprint was racing the Standard the day before,” he joked. “The shorter distance just meant going hard for half the time.”
David summed up his Wollongong experience in these three words: most memorable experience. And with three golds to his name, it’s easy to see why!
He also paid tribute to the event organisers and support crew: “Congratulations to AusTriathlon, NSW Triathlon, Mark ‘Emo’ Emerton and the entire team of workers and volunteers. This was the best World Championships I’ve ever competed in.”
David also shared a special shoutout to AusTriathlon’s National Age Group Team Manager, Alex Fehon. “She’s an unbelievable force for the Australian team,” David said. “Alex was meticulous in preparing each of us every step of the way. Her calmness is infectious, and with over 1200 athletes to manage, she did an absolutely amazing job.”
David McEwan’s triple triumph adds a golden glow to NSW’s legacy at the World Championships.
