NSW Triathlon is proud to launch our Ambassadors for Season 26/27 – a celebration of the people who make our community stronger, more connected, and more inspiring. Across the season, we’ll be sharing these stories of athletes from all walks of life who embody the spirit of our sport. You’ll see them at events, club races, and of course on our social channels, so be sure to say hello – they’re here to support, encourage, and champion the triathlon community across NSW.
Next up we introduce Liam Thurston from Panthers Tri Club with a short Q&A about his time in the sport and what the season is shaping up to look like.
Tell us a little about yourself outside of triathlon.
I’m a husband of almost four years and a recently new father to a beautiful little girl. Family is a huge part of my life, and balancing training with being present at home is something I’m really proud of.
How did you first find your way into triathlon?
I started triathlon in 2023 after wanting to try something new post‑COVID. I’ve always been active – running, mountain biking, cycling and rock climbing – but triathlon quickly became the challenge I didn’t know I needed.
What has your journey in the sport looked like so far?
Since starting in 2023, I’ve loved racing with Panthers Tri Club at club events and stepping into bigger races across NSW and beyond. I’ve completed several sprint and standard distances, Club Champs, and my personal favourite – Ironman 70.3. A major highlight was representing Australia at the Age Group World Championships in Wollongong in 2025. Racing in the green and gold was an unforgettable experience.
What’s on the race calendar for this season?
This season I’m lining up for:
-
PTC Club races in September, October and December (note everyone is always welcome to these races).
-
Standard Distance at Little Husky
-
Ironman 70.3 Western Australia
-
Club Champs in February 2027
-
Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney 2027
What motivates you to keep showing up?
I love the structure, the challenge and the constant opportunity to improve in the sport. Triathlon gives me purpose, community and a way to push myself while still being grounded in family life.
We’re excited to have you on board as a NSW Triathlon Ambassador – what does it mean for you?
It’s a chance to share my journey, encourage others to give the sport a go, and represent the community that has supported me since day one.
With club racing back in swing from this coming weekend, be sure to say hello to Liam if you’re heading out to a Panther’s club race across the season and look out for him at the above events, plus sharing the season via our socials.
