NSW Ambassador – Meet Peta-Maree Kearns

4 Sep 2026

Across NSW, our triathlon community is filled with people whose stories, motivations and pathways into the sport are so different – yet all connected by the same passion for swim, bike and run. This season, we’re excited to welcome back returning Ambassador Peta‑Maree Kearns from Maitland Tri Club, whose energy, encouragement and genuine love for the sport made her a standout last year.

You may have seen Peta at events across the State or caught one of her ambassador posts last season, but we wanted you to get to know her a little better through this Q&A.

Introduce yourself to those who might not know you in our tri community.

I first discovered triathlon in 2019 when I took part in a team event, and I was instantly hooked. The atmosphere, sense of community, and encouragement from everyone involved made a lasting impression and inspired me to keep coming back.

I live in the Maitland area and am a proud member of Maitland Tri Club. I also train with a fantastic local group coached by Peter Hodgson at Just Dig Deeper, whose support and expertise have played a big role in my triathlon journey.

Since that first race, triathlon has become a huge part of my life, giving me opportunities to challenge myself, meet amazing people, and be part of such a welcoming community.

What did you enjoy most about being an NSW Triathlon Ambassador last season?

One of my favourite things about being an Ambassador was being part of a group of people who all shared a similar goal: encouraging and inspiring others to give triathlon a go. It was incredibly rewarding to connect with athletes from all backgrounds and experience levels, and to show that you don’t have to be a professional to enjoy the sport.

Seeing everyday people challenge themselves, step outside their comfort zone, and have fun along the way was truly inspiring. Being able to support and motivate others on their triathlon journey made the Ambassador experience so special.

At the start of last season you had some big goals – how did you go achieving them?

My main goal was simple: to finish Western Sydney 70.3. I wasn’t chasing a particular time; I just wanted to cross the finish line and avoid a DNF. I’m proud to say I achieved that goal!

Completing the race was a huge personal milestone and a reminder that persistence and determination can take you further than you think. It was incredibly rewarding and has given me the confidence to keep setting new challenges for myself.

Can you share a special highlight from your triathlon journey so far?

There have been so many highlights that it’s hard to choose just one. But finishing my first 70.3 stands out as the most significant.

Going from being overweight, losing that weight, staying committed to my training, and not letting ongoing knee issues stop me from pursuing my goals was an incredible achievement. Crossing the finish line was emotional – a reminder that with determination and persistence, you can accomplish things you once thought were impossible.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about giving triathlon a go?

Don’t be scared. Honestly, the hardest part is taking that first step and hitting the registration button.

Once you’ve signed up, the training comes naturally and there’s plenty of support available along the way. The triathlon community is incredibly welcoming, and you’re never alone. Reach out, ask questions, and connect with others – people are always happy to help.

Most importantly, remember that triathlon is for everyone, not just elite athletes. Give it a go, have fun, and you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.

What races are on your calendar for the upcoming season?

I’m planning to tackle the local triathlons – Stockton, Lake Mac – plus some running events like Newy Run and Forster. I also want to support local tri clubs by joining their monthly races: Maitland, Newcastle, Tomaree and Singleton.

Any big goals we can cheer you on for this season?

My biggest goal comes early in the season: finishing the Port Macquarie Ironman. More than anything, I want to cross that finish line and hear the words every triathlete dreams of hearing: “You are an Ironman.”

It will be a huge test of commitment, determination and resilience, but I’m excited for the journey and hopeful that all the hard work will pay off on race day.

We can’t wait to cheer that goal Peta, and look forward to the season with you !
