Australia has closed out its World Triathlon Multisport Championships campaign with three more medals on the last day of competition in Pontevedra.
In testing conditions under a brutal Spanish sun, athletes dug deep in the Aquabike and Long Distance events, capping a superb week.
New South Wales’ Geraldine Blomfield-Brown, originally from France, earned silver in the Female 55-59 Age Group Aquabike and describe the experience as a powerful moment of pride in representing her adopted home.
“It was a very tough one – a tale of survival, but I feel very privileged to be her,” she said post-race.
“Racing for Australia is very, very special because this is my adopted country. I was naturalised Australian a few years back and I would never go anywhere else because it’s such a precious place – I’m very, very emotional.”
Joining Blomfield-Brown on the podium was fellow New South Welshman Sam Levick, who earned bronze in the Male 35-39 Aquabike, and Queensland’s Beatriz Gil, who claimed bronze in the Female 35-39 Long Distance.
Levick described the experience as an honour:
“It’s really nice to represent our country,” he said.
“It’s a real honour to be here, put on the green and gold, and say we’re representing our country.”
For Gil, racing in Spain while representing her adopted home of Australia was particularly meaningful.
“I’m very proud to race for Australia. I’ve been living there for too long and it’s now my home,” she said.
“Even though it was very important for me to race in Spain, which is my nation of origin, it was very important for me to race for Australia.”
Australia finishes the Multisport Championships with 18 medals: seven gold, five silver, and six bronze – capping off a stellar week on the world stage.
