AusTriathlon is proud to announce reigning Age Group (20-24) World Champion and 6-time member of the Australian Team, Kye Robinson as the Flag Bearer for the Australian Age Group Team headed to the World Triathlon Age Group Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, this September.
Robinson will lead a team of more than 120 Australian age group athletes into competition, carrying the Australian flag as the team gathers to represent green and gold on the world stage.
The surprise announcement was delivered during a video call from renowned World Triathlon Championship Series commentator and fellow Australian Age Group Team member, Will McCloy, who shared the news with a shocked but humble Robinson.
A member of Gold Coast-based Team T-Rex Triathlon Club, Robinson is no stranger to international competition, having represented Australia on six previous occasions. His selection as Flag Bearer recognises not only his exceptional performances, but also his commitment to the values of the Australian Age Group Team.
The 21-year-old heads to Pontevedra as the reigning World Champion in the Men’s 20-24 Standard Distance Triathlon, having claimed the title at the 2024 World Triathlon Age Group World Championships in Wollongong. He also holds the distinction of being the inaugural Men’s 20-24 T100 Age Group World Champion following his victory in Qatar late last year.
Robinson will once again pull on the green and gold in Pontevedra, competing in both the Men’s 20-24 Standard Distance Triathlon and Australia’s X80 Mixed Team Relay team.
Speaking after receiving the news, Robinson said he was honoured to be selected to lead the Australian team.
“Representing Australia is always something I’m incredibly proud of, so to be named Flag Bearer is a really special honour,” Robinson said.
“The Age Group Team is made up of athletes from all walks of life who train hard and make sacrifices to be here. To be chosen to represent them in this way means a lot and is something I’ll remember forever.”
While Robinson’s achievements on the racecourse have made him one of Australia’s most successful age group athletes, his impact extends beyond competition.
Demonstrating his commitment to supporting the next generation of triathletes, Robinson recently donated his S-Works Tarmac Road bike to Team T-Rex so it could be used by a junior athlete who may not otherwise have access to high-performance equipment.
His passion for representing Australia is also a family affair. Kye had the privilege of competing alongside his father, Ian Robinson, and mother, Michelle Robinson, as members of the Australian Age Group Team at the 2024 World Triathlon Age Group Multisport World Championships in Townsville. He later competed alongside his father, Ian, at the 2024 World Triathlon Age Group Triathlon World Championships in Torremolinos, Spain.
National Manager Australian Age Group Teams, Alex Fehon said Robinson was a deserving recipient of the honour.
“Kye’s achievements on the world stage speak for themselves, but what stood out throughout the nomination process was the way he represents our sport and supports those around him,” Alex said.
“He is a fantastic ambassador for the Australian Age Group Team, his local club and the wider triathlon community. We are incredibly proud to have him lead our team into Pontevedra.”
The World Triathlon Age Group Championships will take place in Pontevedra, Spain, from 23-27 September, with more than 120 Australian athletes set to compete across a range of races and age group categories.
