This week is National Volunteers Week, and AusTriathlon is celebrating by highlighting members of the triathlon community who play a pivotal role in the sport.
Australian Capital Territory local Celine Payet has been involved with Females in Training (FIT) for many years, first getting into triathlon through a background in running and now is a core individual of the volunteering team.
“I first joined triathlon with a background in running and learnt that FIT incorporates all the triathlon disciplines,” Payet said.
“FIT also has so many wonderful people helping to run the events, so when the call came out that they needed some volunteers for the triathlon events – I stood up to help as a member.
“So personally, I haven’t competed in many triathlons – only a few mini tri’s – but when you’re representing FIT it’s important to think of yourself as being a member of the organisation but also the wider community and now I’ve come to love volunteering at triathlon events.
“One of my favourite events I have volunteered at was a few years ago at the Summer Series, it was amazing to be down by the lake in stunning conditions.
“Setting up and helping to make sure the event happens and supporting the athletes and my fellow FIT friends – and seeing them kick goals is amazing.
“And it is because of volunteering that these things can happen, events like this don’t happen without volunteers and it is really fulfilling to help create these experiences for others.”
Celine was also recognised for her dedication to the triathlon community when she was announced as the 2024 Volunteer of the Year.
“I actually was a little embarrassed because there are people doing amazing stuff, and certainly more devoting of their time than I do,” she said.
“So to be recognized from a wider group of people doing amazing stuff and contributing and giving back to the sport – it’s really humbling.
“But the triathlon community has been so welcoming, and there’s something for everybody at any level.
“Effort is rewarded and cheered on and supported as much as results, so I think it’s the acceptance of the community that is really special.
“To anyone wanting to get involved with volunteering, it is so fun and you get to meet some great people.
“You get out of it more than you put in and it doesn’t happen without people volunteering.
“This is the opportunity to be with a community, connect with people and contribute – it’s fun and it’s fulfilling, and you learn new skills.”
