QLD Championship Series title fights heat up after Standard Distance showdown

Queensland’s triathletes were out in full force in Robina on Sunday, 2 February for the QLD Standard Distance Championships, held at Round 5 of the Pho3nix Queensland Tri Series. 

The sixth stop of the QLD Championship Series saw 22 new Standard Distance Champions crowned across age groups, with athletes battling it out for silverware and all-important bragging rights. 

With only two championship races left for the season, every position counted as athletes went all in for crucial points towards series standings. 

With QLD Championship Series titles on the line, the race for top honour’s among Queensland’s best age group triathletes is heating up as we edge closer to the final two events of the season – next month’s Long Course Championships at Hell of the West and the Sprint Regional Championships at April’s Auswide Bank Sprint Triathlon. 

The weekend’s results caused a shake-up in some leaderboards, setting the stage for thrilling battles ahead.  

In the 30-34 Male category, Ignacio de Acha Dorado holds a narrow lead with, Hamish Harrison now sitting just four points behind after securing back-to-back wins at the QLD Sprint and Standard Distance Championships. 

The 35-39 Male category mirrors a tight competition, as Victor Gracio leads Daniel Smith by six points. Smith’s surge up the leaderboard, powered by consecutive victories, setting up a thrilling race for the title. 

The 40-44 Male category saw Kane Finch take top honours on the weekend, also claiming top spot on the leaderboard ahead of Adam Chadburn by six points. 

A bronze medal finish on the weekend saw Eric Stephen Leach take the lead from Sam Cooke in the 55-59 Male category. The podium finish marks Leach’s third consecutive top-three result in the QLD Championship Series, cementing his place as a top contender for the overall championship. 

While some athletes kept the title tussles tight, others maintained their momentum, extending their leads in the series with impressive performances at Robina. 

Angela Clarke’s second-place finish gave her a solid boost in the 55-59 Female category, pushing her lead out to 24 points as she stays firmly in control of the title race. 

Marion Hermitage also strengthened her hold on the 60-64 Female division, claiming the gold medal and extending her lead to 22 points, keeping her well ahead of the pack. 

 Meanwhile, Phillip Hermitage continued his strong season in the 65-69 Male category, with a bronze medal performance adding to his advantage and stretching his lead to 42 points.
