In what was the largest sporting spectacle to ever be held in Townsville, more than 3000 individuals competed over the course of the World Championships across five different levels of athletes, including Age Group, Para triathletes, Junior, Under 23 and Elites.

283 TeamAus athletes earned themself a World Championship medal, 91 of them Gold, while hundreds of other Aussie athletes secured themselves a top 10 finish, making their mark on the course.

AusTriathlon CEO, Tim Harradine says the Australian triathlon community has done the nation proud.

“On behalf of AusTriathlon, I extend my sincerest congratulations to all those who took part in the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport World Championships Townsville and especially to those leaving North Queensland with a medal,” said Harradine.

“Our TeamAus athletes did us proud time and time again over the 12 day event, and it was absolutely incredible to see the immense outpouring of support the team provided for each other along the way.

“There’s no better way to finish the event on home soil than by securing our best ever finish at a Multisport World Championships, so I’m happy to declare the event a major success for Australian triathletes.

“The event was truly world class and on behalf of AusTriathlon, I’d like to thank IRONMAN Oceania, World Triathlon, the Technical team, volunteers and all the athletes who took part for making the event exceptional.

“It was a true celebration of Multisport. We couldn’t be more thankful to the Queensland Government, Tourism and Events Queensland and Townsville for their support and commitment to bring the event to North Queensland,” he said.

Age Group athlete Kevin Fergusson claimed five gold medals over the course of the event, winning a medal in every event he entered and earning himself the coveted Australian Multisport Legend title alongside Phillip Hermitage, Geoff Breese, Don McArthur, Sam Cooke, David Comiskey, Darren Cronshaw, James Leonard, Matthew Pooley and Damian Persen.

“Being a very proud Aussie, I love wearing green and gold and seeing so many Aussies up on the podium and out on course,” said Fergusson.

“I loved being surrounded by so many fellow Aussies, the encouragement out on course and having so many Aussie spectators encouraging you was amazing. We’ve definitely had the home country advantage.”
