Vale Col Stewart – Honouring a Coaching Legend

12 Sep 2025

AusTriathlon is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Col Stewart, a pioneering figure in Australian and international triathlon, who passed away earlier today.

Col’s legacy spans more than four decades as a coach and mentor to thousands of athletes. His influence helped shape the sport from its earliest days, both nationally and globally. Among his many achievements, Col coached his son Miles Stewart to a fourth-place finish at the inaugural Triathlon World Championships, a moment that marked the beginning of a remarkable coaching career.

Over the years, Col guided more than 30 Olympians, Ironman champions, and World Triathlon Junior and Senior World Champions. His coaching culture on the Gold Coast became a magnet for elite athletes and coaches, fostering a spirit of excellence, integrity, and sportsmanship that defined an era of Australian triathlon.

Col’s impact extended far beyond elite sport. He mentored over 1,000 age-group athletes and played a pivotal role in developing triathlon communities in Australia and abroad, including significant contributions to the Japanese triathlon scene.

This morning, AusTriathlon Life Member Brian Hinton and CEO Tim Harradine were scheduled to visit Col to present him with confirmation of Life Membership nomination — one of the organisation’s highest honours. Tragically, Col passed away before the presentation could take place.

AusTriathlon is proud to announce that Col Stewart will be posthumously recognised for his extraordinary service and enduring legacy.

Col’s influence will continue to be felt across the sport for generations to come. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Col’s family, friends, and the entire triathlon community.

Rest in peace, Col. Your legacy lives on.
