Each year, the Pho3nix Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial brings the triathlon community together for something deeper than racing. It is a day to honour the life of Luke Harrop – a talented athlete, loyal friend and much-loved member of the Australian triathlon family whose legacy continues to shape the sport more than two decades on.
Twenty-four years may have passed since Luke’s passing in 2002, but for those who knew him, the memories remain vivid.
We spoke to Toby Coote, one of Luke’s close friends and contributor to this long-standing event. “The years pass, but we don’t forget and we never will. This is why this event is so special.”
For many from that era, the race is a chance to reconnect with old teammates, share stories and celebrate the spirit that Luke brought to the sport – a spirit grounded in friendship, laughter and a love of life.
Luke was known as a larrikin, someone who enjoyed a laugh and brought energy to those around him. Those who trained alongside him remember not only his talent, but the joy he brought to everyday moments.
This event is our annual reminder that it’s important to live life to its fullest. “We know Luke did in his short time doing what he loved, making us all laugh, smile and having fun.” Toby reflects.
At the same time, Luke’s life also inspires courage to follow ambition and embrace opportunity. “Have a go and follow a dream, no matter how big or small,” Toby shares.
Today, the Pho3nix Gold Coast Triathlon continues that legacy by connecting generations of athletes. For some, it is their first introduction to the history of the sport. For others, it is a meaningful opportunity to remember, reflect and reconnect with the values that sit at the heart of triathlon: resilience, camaraderie and gratitude.
Events like this remind us that triathlon is more than finish times and podiums. It’s about community, it’s about perspective. And it’s about recognising how fortunate we are to do what we love.
This year also marks its 40th year milestone that belongs not just to the event, but to the community that built it. Since 1987, the Gold Coast Triathlon has grown from a local passion project into one of Australia’s most enduring triathlon experiences shaped by the athletes, volunteers, and families who return year after year.
The Pho3nix Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial is a two-day event taking place on the Gold Coast. The weekend begins with the free Pho3nix Kids events on 11 April, followed by the main day of racing on 12 April.
