Women in Tri I Leeanne Tennant

ACT resident and board member, Leeanne Tennant, is one of the nation’s capital’s most dedicated volunteers from the Females in Training (FIT) club.

With a decade of triathlon experience behind her, the opportunities to travel and compete are some of her most memorable moments.

“In 2015 a friend asked me to enter a female only triathlon, and I thought ‘no way I can’t swim 200m’, but I went along to support my friend,” Tennant said.

“Even now it gives me goose bumps to remember the excitement of the day and how every person who crossed that finish line was cheered on like they had won a gold medal at the Olympics – I thought I must have some of this excitement in my life!

“Going to ITU World Championships in Cozumel Mexico in 2016 is a favourite memory.

“The Opening Ceremony street parade was so exciting with Mexican performers lining the street.

“Representing my country and wearing the Australian green and gold was amazing.

“Another personal highlight was competing at the Gold Coast ITU World Championships in 2018 and achieving a personal best performance.”

With a background in numbers, Leeanne joined the ACT Triathlon Board to help support the community further, through another passion of hers.

“I joined the TACT Board because they were looking for a Treasurer,” she said.

“As an accountant I thought I could do this role and give back to the sport.

“It has been challenging at times but it has given me an in-depth knowledge into the governance of the sport.

“To understand the cost and logistics of holding events and managing members’ expectations.”

Leeanne is also a passionate volunteer with the Females in Training club, and her love for the sport and its welcoming community shines through in everything she does.

“Females in Training (FIT) is an inclusive club for all ages (over 18) and all levels of ability,” she said.

“Participation is the goal and everyone is celebrated in FIT whether you come first or last, and there is also coffee and chats after every training session.

“I have trained with professional coaches over the years and by becoming a Foundation Coach myself I can now share my knowledge with others.

“It has changed my life – triathlon has given me a life besides my family.

“Travelling to events across Australia I have made friends that I see at other events. Everyone involved in triathlon is friendly and welcoming.

“To anyone considering making their start in the sport, give it a go and join a club.

“It doesn’t matter what you think you can’t do, just start training and enjoying the camaraderie of the club.

“Before you know it you’ll be able to compete in races at whatever level you choose.”
