Find your Unstoppable I Glenn Lydyard

4 Aug 2025

Newly appointed South Australia Triathlon President Glenn Lydyard has been hooked on the sport since university and is relishing the opportunity to give back to the community that has been a part of his life for many years.

“I took to road cycling through high school and university which led to being recruited by a family member for a team triathlon down at West Lakes,” Lydyard said.

“I’d always been interested in triathlons but could never pluck up the courage to do one, I thought it was for fit people and ‘real’ athletes.

“My first full triathlon was at a corporate triathlon and that really helped get me over that first barrier…me! Loxton was next and then I was hooked!

“My personal highlight was getting to race in the green and gold at the 2015 World Duathlon Championships in Adelaide.

“A massive bucket list item for me was to represent my country.

“I’ve never been a naturally talented athlete, I’m tall and run funny, certainly never thought I could represent Australia.

“So to be able to do it in my hometown on the banks of the Torrens with friends and family watching was simply magical. My favourite photos of all time are my kids and I at the finish line.

“It’s such a special opportunity and why I’m so excited for all our South Aussies heading over to Wollongong in October, I’ll be cheering you all on – do us proud!”

The triathlon community has been a core part of the journey for Glenn, and the support and friendships that have developed in the sport are a huge part of his desire to give back to the sport as President.

“When I think back to when I was racing, my fondest memories are not the performances or the races, it’s the people,” he said.

“I was lucky enough to train in a small squad and there’s something about showing up together, day in, day out through the good, the bad and the ugly, that forges some great friendships.

“For me, it was in those moments when silence falls over the group and the hurt locker sets in that you learn the most about yourself and your mates, each searching to simply be better today than yesterday.

“I was inspired to pursue the President role by my want to give back to the sport that has given me so much.

“In a society that often struggles with connection and community, sport brings people together.

“From a first timer taking the plunge through to our high-performance athletes, giving people the opportunity to get moving, get involved and feel part of a community is such a great motivation for me.

“Triathlon can seem a bit daunting. I spent years trying to pluck up the courage to get out there and do one, and all I wish is I’d done it sooner.

“It really is a sport for everyone, and it doesn’t matter if you’re sporting a basket and streamers on your bike or the latest carbon fibre rims, or from whatever walk of life you come from, there is a place for you in triathlon.

“Our clubs do a fantastic job of welcoming and supporting our members and if you’re looking to get involved, please get in touch

“Participation also isn’t just about athletes. There are also many other ways to get involved, from volunteering, coaching and keeping our races safe and fair as technical officials.

“We’d love to have you as part of our community. Please check out our new website for more information.”
