AusTriathlon Leads the Way with Groundbreaking Prize Money for Para triathletes

27 Mar 2026

In a world‑first initiative for Para triathlon, AusTriathlon has announced it will offer prize money to Australian athletes competing in World Triathlon Para Series (WTPS) events, marking a significant step forward in recognising and rewarding excellence in Para sport.

From the 2026 international season, Australian Para triathletes racing at WTPS events will be eligible for prize money based on finishing position, reinforcing AusTriathlon’s commitment to athlete support, equity and high‑performance outcomes.

Prize money on offer will be as follows:

  • 1st place: $1,500
  • 2nd–3rd place: $1,000
  • 4th–5th place: $750
  • 6th–8th place: $500

The initiative is the first of its kind globally in Para triathlon and reflects AusTriathlon’s dedication to leading innovation both domestically and on the world stage.

High Performance Director Shaun Stephens said the introduction of prize money is an important step in valuing the commitment Para athletes make to their sporting careers.

“Our Para athletes train and compete at the highest level, often balancing the unique challenges of international competition, classification demands, travel and life commitments,” Stephens said.

“Rewarding performance through prize money recognises the professionalism, dedication and resilience they bring to their careers, and it sends a clear message that their achievements matter.”

Stephens added that the initiative aligns with AusTriathlon’s broader high‑performance strategy and its commitment to creating meaningful pathways and support structures for Para athletes.

“This is about respect and recognition. Our Para athletes are world‑class, and by leading the way with this initiative, we’re reinforcing the value we place on their performances and their contribution to Australia’s success on the global stage.”

Australia has long been regarded as a powerhouse in Para triathlon, consistently producing Paralympic medalists, world champions and podium performers across multiple classifications. The introduction of prize money at WTPS level strengthens Australia’s position as a global leader in Para sport and reflects a progressive approach to athlete wellbeing and performance sustainability.

The new prize money structure will apply to Australian athletes competing in World Triathlon Para Series events worldwide and complements existing support provided through AusTriathlon’s high‑performance programs.

AusTriathlon’s Chief Executive Officer Tim Harradine added that the move reflects the organisation’s values and ambition for the sport.

The para‑sport uplift announced by Minister Anika Wells, together with the AIS’s ongoing support, signals a powerful national commitment to equity in high‑performance sport. Our introduction of prize money for Para athletes is part of that shared mission. It reflects who we are as a sport – fair, inclusive and striving for excellence. Backed by this momentum, we’re proud to lead the way and hope this sets a new global benchmark for Para triathlon,” said CEO Tim Harradine.
