How to Be a Triathlete on a Budget
There’s a common misconception that participating in triathlons requires a hefty investment. Sure, some people may spend a lot on the sport, and that’s perfectly fine! They love it and can spend their money as they see fit. But what about those of us feeling the financial squeeze in 2024? What about those who aren’t raking in the big bucks?
With rising interest rates and living costs, we’ve brainstormed the top six ways to keep triathlon expenses in check.
- Skip the Gym, Join a Local Triathlon Club
In Sydney, the average gym membership costs around $21 per week, totaling at least $1,100 a year. In contrast, an annual membership with AusTriathlon, NSW Triathlon, or a local club is about $250. Why choose a gym membership when you can train outside, enjoy nature, and bond with like-minded people? Most NSW Triathlon Affiliated Clubs offer weekly swim, bike, and run sessions included in the one-time membership fee. Some clubs even have certified coaches who volunteer their time for free! It’s a win-win for motivation, friendship, and savings.

- Swap or Borrow Gear
Joining a local club opens up opportunities to buy or borrow gear from fellow members at great prices. Many triathletes are eager to sell their unused equipment and apparel cheaply. There’s no need to spend a fortune on brand-new gear when you can still enjoy the sport on a budget.
- Affordable Triathlon Watches
While high-end triathlon watches can be pricey, you don’t need to break the bank. Entry-level watches can start around $200. If that’s still out of reach, your smartphone can serve as a suitable alternative for tracking your workouts using apps like Strava.
- Second-Hand Bikes Offer Great Value
A bike is often the most significant expense in triathlon. However, a good quality second-hand bike can offer excellent performance at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Many beginners and even experienced athletes can make significant improvements with a used bike. Plus, using your bike for commuting saves on public transport and provides extra training miles.
- Affordable Local Races
Did you know there are around 450 races in NSW each season, with 375 hosted by local clubs? These events are affordable, often requiring little to no travel or accommodation expenses. While they may lack some of the “bells and whistles” of commercial races, they offer a fantastic experience to practice transitions and racing in a budget-friendly way. Some club races are free with membership, while others charge a small fee.
- Enjoy Local Races, Save on Travel
Though overseas races might be tempting, there’s plenty of action right here in NSW and Australia. Sticking closer to home means avoiding the high costs of flights, bike transportation, and overseas logistics. Many local events even offer nearby camping, further reducing accommodation costs. Sharing rides with friends can also cut down on travel expenses, making the experience more fun and affordable.
