The green and gold momentum continued at the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville today with great results recorded across the field and an additional 43 medals added to the Australian medal tally.

The third day of competition saw athletes take part in the 2024 World Triathlon Cross Triathlon Championships Townsville, with outcomes determined from the Elite Male and Female divisions all the way through to the 70-75 Male and Female categories.

In the Elite Men’s category, Michele Bonacina (ITA) crossed the line first for the Gold medal. From across the ditch, Sam Osborne of New Zealand secured the Silver medal while home-grown athlete Benjamin Forbes finished just 0.20 seconds behind in third.

“It was a really great course, I loved it,” said Forbes.

“It felt like a proper mountain bike course which really suited me because that’s my background.

“The swim felt a little chaotic in parts but we pushed through and I had a stitch for the whole first lap of the run but it eventually opened up a bit and I was able to run better.”

In a tight battle for the Elite Women’s podium, Marta Menditto from Italy secured the Gold medal in 1:40:59; Romy Spoelder (NED) the Silver in 1:41:17 and Maeve Kennedy the Bronze in 1:41:50.

“I really enjoyed that race, it was really fast and close,” said Kennedy.

“The Women were together the whole way. At one point I think I had five girls behind me but slowly a few dropped off and it ended up being the three of us really pushing the whole way to the finish line.

“We could see each other on every corner and every straight, so it was just full on from start to finish,” she said.

In the Men’s U23 category, Australia’s Cooper Carswell and Tadgh Williams secured the Silver and Bronze medals respectively behind South African athlete Ryno Owen.

Fellow Aussie Laura Gillard earned herself the Silver medal in the U23 Women’s division, whilst Canberra-based athlete Ash Watts won Gold in the Junior category.

The third day of competition also saw an additional 11 2024 Australian Age Group Cross Triathlon Team Members become world Champions with fantastic efforts from start to finish.

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.
