Australia’s four top-ranked men have been selected to race in the green at gold at the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Torremolinos, Spain this October.
The event marks the first time since the 2019 Finals in Lausanne that all five categories – Elite, Para, Under 23, Junior, and Age Group – will crown world champions at the same event.
Unlike other World Championship events that crown a single outright winner, the elite men and women’s world champions are determined by the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) rankings. Points from the Finals in Torremolinos are added to the athlete’s top three results from the season to decide the title.
Series front-runner Matt Hauser headlines the Australian team, currently sitting atop the rankings ahead of the penultimate race of the season in Weihai, China next week.
With a standout year including a gold medal in Hamburg, a silver in Yokohama, and a seventh-place finish at the Olympics, the former junior world champion is well-positioned to contend for the elite world title in his third consecutive Finals appearance.
He is joined by Paris 2024 Olympic Games teammate Luke Willian, who’s enjoying a career-best year, highlighted by his bronze medal performance at the series opener in Yokohama.
Currently sitting sixth in the WTCS rankings, Willian will make his fifth Finals appearance.
Brandon Copeland returns for his fourth consecutive appearance at the Championship Finals. He joins the team as one of two Australians, alongside Willian, now set to compete in each WTCS event this year.
Currently 25th in the WTCS rankings, his most recent result saw him place 20th in Hamburg, marking his best WTCS finish in three years.
Rounding out the team is Callum McClusky, named a week on from his silver medal performance at the World Triathlon Cup in Valencia, Spain – his second World Triathlon Cup podium of the year following his February win in Napier, New Zealand.
He will make his second consecutive appearance at the Finals, following his debut in Pontevedra, Spain, last year.
