The world of triathlon is inclusive, full of excitement and adventure, and a challenge that once you overcome, anything feels possible.
Shannon Ahern was introduced to this world while studying exercise science at university, where the majority of his studies were focused around conducting and testing triathletes.
It was this focus that drew him in, and Ahern competed in his first triathlon in 1998, and hasn’t looked back since.
Collecting incredible memories and highlights along his journey, Ahern says that his favourite memory is also one of his most recent.
“There are so many favourites, but there is mostly a theme that is competing in races with the Westside Triathlon Club,” Ahern said.
“This year there were a few of us who were selected for the Long Course World Championships in Townsville.
“Training and racing with the club was such an amazing experience.
“Now my daughter is competing in triathlon and is seeking selection for the world championships next year,” he said.
Having had the opportunity to compete in so many different locations, and experience the conditions of many courses, Ahern has two favourite places to race.
“The ‘Hervey Bay 100’ and ‘Hell of the West’ in Goondiwindi have to be my two favourite places to race,” he said.
“They’re both amazing races, both run by an amazing triathlon community.”
The enjoyment of triathlon comes in different forms for everyone, and for Ahern it is the number of contrasting distances available in competitions around Australia.
“The range of distances and the opportunity to race for Australia is what I love most about the sport,” Ahern said.
“There is a distance for everyone to test themselves against, whether that is a super sprint for anyone starting, or all the way to the long course for a more seasoned athlete.”
In addition to being an exciting sport to be involved with, triathlon is known for its positive community and Ahern has been able to experience the effects of this in his own life.
“I have met and become great friends with so many of the triathlon community, and we all share that crazy need to get up before sunrise,” he said.
“Being a part of the triathlon club has meant that I have been able to be involved in some great adventures, ones I would have never even contemplated doing on my own.
“For anyone who is just starting to get involved with triathlon, I would strongly suggest that you find a local club, start training and look for races to participate in with mates.”
